Sustainable Agricultural Practices and their Influence on Household Food Security in the Deciduous Agroecological Zone in Ghana

Abstract:

Sustainable Agricultural Practices (SAPs) are widely promoted in Sub-Saharan Africa as pathways to enhancing food security, improving resilience, and safeguarding natural resources. Yet, adoption remains uneven, and the extent to which these practices translate into improved household food security under different socio-economic contexts is less understood. This study examined (i) the socio-demographic, economic, and farm-level factors influencing adoption of SAPs, (ii) the relationship between adoption of selected SAPs (crop diversification, organic fertiliser use, and agroforestry) and household food security, and (iii) the net effect of SAPs on food security after controlling for farmer socio-demographic and economic characteristics. Using cross-sectional data from 300 farming households in Ashanti Region, food security was measured using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES). Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and ordered logistic regression model was applied to analyse adoption patterns and effects. The findings showed that adoption of SAPs was significantly associated with several socio-demographic and economic factors, including gender, marital status, religion, dependents, primary and secondary occupations, land ownership, access to agricultural information, membership in farmer groups, and participation in training. Crop diversification emerged as the most robust predictor of household food security, with adopters being more than three times as likely to be food secure compared to non-adopters, even after controlling for other characteristics. Organic fertiliser use was positively but inconsistently associated with food security, while agroforestry adoption did not reach statistical significance. Among background variables, number of dependents, secondary occupation, farm size, number of farms, and education level were key determinants of household food security. The study contributes new evidence by integrating SAP adoption and household characteristics within a single analytical framework, showing that while SAPs are critical for food security, their impact is shaped by household structure and livelihood strategies. The findings highlight the need for policy interventions that promote crop diversification, strengthen extension and farmer groups, and provide targeted support to households with high dependency burdens and limited resources.
