Abstract:

The findings of this thesis provide a comprehensive understanding of the energy balance, water use efficiency (WUE), and carbon dynamics of the Rajec forest ecosystem over a six-year period, from 2015 to 2021. Using high-resolution data collected via Eddy Covariance techniques, the study captured critical insights into how the forest responds to environmental stressors, especially in the face of increasing climate variability and extreme weather events such as droughts. One of the key conclusions of this research is the pronounced variability in the forest's energy fluxes, particularly sensible heat (H) and latent heat (LE), across different years. The forest exhibited significant reductions in LE fluxes during the drought years of 2015 and 2018, indicating its adaptive response to limited soil moisture and increased atmospheric demand. In contrast, during normal years, the forest maintained a more balanced energy partitioning, suggesting greater resilience under less stressful conditions. Water use efficiency emerged as a crucial metric for understanding the forest’s ability to optimize carbon uptake relative to water loss. WUE was notably lower during drought years, demonstrating the challenges the forest faces in maintaining productivity under water stress. However, during normal years, WUE remained more stable, highlighting the forest’s ability to efficiently use water resources when environmental conditions are favorable. The study also explored the relationship between WUE and environmental factors like soil moisture content and vapor pressure deficit (VPD), showing that these factors have a profound influence on forest productivity, particularly during the growing season. Under extreme conditions, such as drought, traditional energy balance metrics like the Bowen ratio became less predictive, underscoring the complex interplay between atmospheric evaporative demand and ecosystem responses. In terms of carbon dynamics, the research found that carbon uptake, measured as gross primary productivity (GPP), was negatively impacted during drought years due to higher atmospheric evaporative demand (as reflected in increased VPD). In contrast, during normal years, GPP exhibited more stable patterns, with atmospheric conditions playing a less dominant role in regulating carbon uptake. This thesis has demonstrated the complex and dynamic nature of the Rajec forest ecosystem, highlighting how energy balance, water use efficiency, and carbon uptake are intricately linked and influenced by environmental conditions. The variability observed across different years, particularly in response to drought, underscores the sensitivity of forest ecosystems to climatic variability and the importance of adaptive management strategies to enhance resilience. The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on forest ecosystem responses to climate change, offering valuable insights for both scientific understanding and practical forest management. By integrating energy balance metrics with water use efficiency and carbon dynamics, this research provides a comprehensive framework for assessing forest health and productivity under changing environmental conditions. As climate change continues to pose significant challenges, the insights gained from this study highlight the need for continuous monitoring and the development of adaptive strategies that can mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events.
