Abstract:

The textile sector functions as the economic support system of Bangladesh through its handling of 80% of export values and maintenance of 4 million jobs. The textile industry continues to face increasing exposure to climate change effects because these developments create substantial environmental alongside economic and social problems. This research analyses both the direct effects and secondary impacts of climate change on Bangladesh’s textile business, studies how global fashion houses operate, and evaluates the sustainability aspects arising from fast fashion and the circular economy approach. The evaluation investigates both the advantages and challenges of circular economy approaches as potential solutions for combating climate change within this industrial sector. Research reveals that climate change delivers major adverse impacts on the textile sector of Bangladesh because of elevated temperatures along with water shortages and episodes of flooding and cyclonic storms. Labour productivity suffers from heat stress, which results in annual costs of $6 billion from reduced worker productivity within the industry. Water scarcity in Bangladesh forced chemical processing manufacturers to develop water-efficient technologies because it disrupted their fundamental dyeing and finishing operations as well as raised operation expenses. Supply chain delays caused by flooding along with extreme weather events result in shipping delays that both increase costs and reduce global competitiveness in the Bangladesh industry. Manufacturers now need to establish training programmes for their workforce because climate- driven employee moves create workforce instability. The study examines how Bangladeshi textile industries form adaptation plans to climate change under the influence of major fashion brands operating worldwide. H&M Zara and Nike, along with major brands, mandate sustainability requirements which force their suppliers to implement organic fibre usage waste minimisation techniques and energy conservation methods. Manufacturers incur increased production expenses when they follow sustainability standards since multiple global brands insist on maintaining their requirement of fast and inexpensive product manufacturing, which results in environmental infractions and staff mistreatment. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) struggle to cover sustainable investments because most brands lack financial programmes to encourage such initiatives. 2 Fast fashion and the circular economy have contradictory environmental impacts. Fast fashion leaves 92 million tonnes of textile waste annually, making it a significant polluter. A circular economy that recycles and upgrades materials may remove 50% of waste. Circular fashion creates jobs, savings, and new enterprises via textile re-sale and garment rental. This strategy has challenges because of high start-up costs, poor recycling infrastructure, and weak regulation. The study shows the pros and cons of circular economy climate change solutions in Bangladesh's textile industry. Circular economy practices reduce raw material usage and improve resource management, waste reduction, and climate preservation. Poor infrastructure, economic constraints, and regulatory deficiencies impede large-scale deployment. Poor consumer knowledge of sustainable clothes inhibits the move from rapid fashion. Research suggests legislative changes and financial incentives to increase sustainability and climate resilience. The government should enhance environmental legislation and build textile waste recycling networks nationwide to finance sustainable industry. Manufacturers must create sustainable dyeing procedures, water-saving technologies, and solar power infrastructure. They must also compel companies to offer ethical working conditions and invest in green transitions.
