Analysis of factors influencing the adaptation behaviour of small-scale cocoa farmers towards climate change in the Eastern region of Ghana

Abstract:

Climate change poses significant threats to cocoa production in Ghana, with increasing temperature variability, erratic rainfall, and rising pest infestations undermining yields and farmer livelihoods. Existing research on cocoa farmers' climate adaptation in Eastern region reveals several underexplored dimensions that constrain comprehensive understanding of behavioural drivers. This study fills the gap by providing a dynamic, multi-level, and behaviorally informed analysis of cocoa farmers’ adaptation to climate change in the Asamankese District of the Eastern Region of Ghana, a major cocoa-producing area experiencing notable climate-induced stress. The aim was to analyse how socio-demographic, economic, cognitive, and institutional factors shape farmers’ adaptation strategies over time, and to assess the role of indigenous knowledge and national policy support in influencing adaptive behaviour. A quantitative research design was employed using a structured questionnaire administered to cocoa farmers in the district. Using purposive and stratified sampling, 150 valid responses were obtained from small-scale cocoa farmers in the Asamankese District of the Eastern Region of Ghana in 2025. Descriptive statistics, ordinal logistic regression, confirmatory factor analysis, and mediation modelling (PROCESS Model 4) were used to determine the predictors of adaptation behaviour and the pathways through which climate-risk perception and indigenous knowledge influence adaptation. Results show that farmers have significantly shifted their practices over the past decade, particularly in pesticide use, shade-tree planting, mulching, and planting-date adjustments. Education (OR = 1.42), income (OR = 1.68), farming experience (OR = 1.05), and secure land tenure (OR = 2.31) were the strongest predictors of adaptation. Additionally, indigenous knowledge partially mediated the relationship between climate-risk perception and adaptation behaviour. Policy and extension services significantly enhanced livelihood resilience, although accessibility gaps and gender disparities persist. The study concludes that improving adaptation among smallholders requires targeted training, equitable policy support, and integrated climate information systems that respect and incorporate indigenous knowledge.
