What can the dietitian do for patients with schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder?

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the issue of nutrition in schizophrenic patients and patients suffering from a bipolar affective disorder and subsequently examines the possible role of nutrition therapist in relation to these disorders. Theoretical part contains a summary of current knowledge of these disorders, nutritional specifics and related factors which influence these patients. It also outlines patients’ nutritional issues and their influence on the nutritional status. It argues the possibility of treating patients through not only medication, but also through nutrition, dietary regimes, or dietary supplements. Practical part consists of two case studies of people with schizophrenia and two case studies of people diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder, which then further presents a subsequent evaluation based on their three-day diet record and computed values of their nutritional consumption.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá problematikou výživy u pacientov so schizofréniou a pacientov trpiacich bipolárnou afektívnou poruchou a naskytujúcou sa úlohou nutričného terapeuta pri týchto poruchách. Teoretická časť prináša zhrnutie doterajších poznatkov týchto porúch, špecifík výživy a s nimi súvisiacich faktorov, ktoré týchto pacientov ovplyvňujú. Poskytuje tiež priestor na vykreslenie nutričných problémov, ktoré sa týchto pacientov týkajú a ovplyvňujú ich výživový stav. Predkladá možnosť terapie porúch nielen prostredníctvom medikácie, ale aj prostredníctvom výživy, diétnych režimov či doplnkov stravy. Praktickú časť tvoria dve kazuistiky pacientov so schizofréniou a dve kazuistiky pacientov s bipolárnou afektívnou poruchou, ktorá prezentuje ich následné vyhodnotenie na základe obdržaného trojdenného záznamu stravy a vypočítaných hodnôt nutričnej spotreby.
