Numerical schemes for advection-diffusion problems

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá některými iteračními metodami pro hledání řešení stacionární difúzní a advekčně-difúzní diferenciální rovnice. Především je popsána efektivní explicitní metoda založená na převodu původní rovnice na soustavu dvou PDR hyperbolického typu. Jejími výhodami jsou rychlá konvergence k ustálenému stavu, časový krok velikosti O(h) a výpočet tokových funkcí se stejnou přesností jako řešení. Navíc umožňuje jednotný přístup k advekci a difúzi při řešení advekčně-difúzní rovnice a lze ji zobecnit pro řešení Navierových-Stokesových rovnic. V závěru práce prezentujeme výsledky numerických experimentů, jejichž hlavním cílem bylo prověření vlastností této metody. Dále jsme testovali rozšíření metody pro řešení rovnic s proměnným difúzním koeficientem s použitím vhodného předpodmínění.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with several iterative methods for computing the steady state solution of the diffusion and advection-diffusion equation. In particular, we describe an efficient explicit method based on solving an equivalent first-order hyperbolic system instead of the original equation. Its advantages are fast convergence toward the steady state, O(h) time step and computation of the solution gradients with the same order of accuracy as the solution. Moreover, it allows a unified approach to advection and diffusion in the case of advection-diffusion equation and it can be generalized for computing the solution of Navier-Stokes equations. At the end of the thesis we present numerical results, the main purpose of which was to verify its properties. We also tested an extension of the method for solving equations with variable diffusion coefficient using suitable preconditioning.
