Geography of sport: the presence of an extraleague sports club in a small municipality

Abstract:

Diplomová práce analyzuje vliv sportovního klubu na život v obci, kde tento klub působí. Cílem práce je shrnutí dosavadní literatury zabývající se touto problematikou a poukázání na možné pozitivní a negativní vlivy úspěšných sportovních klubů v obci, konkrétně na příkladu klubu házené TJ Sokol Nové Veselí. Identifikace vlivů vychází z analýzy veřejně dostupných dat a z rozhovorů s místními aktéry, kterých se přítomnost klubu dotýká. Na základě výzkumu bylo zjištěno, že klub házené ovlivňuje život v obci v rámci spolupráce s místní základní školou, kde je hlavním cílem zapojení dětí do sportovních aktivit, modernizací sportovišť či rozšiřování povědomí o městysi v celé ČR. V rámci negativních vlivů je identifikováno blokování časových úseků ve sportovní hale na úkor jiných sportovních oddílů či znevýhodnění místních hráčů z dorosteneckých kategorií. Důležitou součástí práce je také provedené dotazníkové šetření v městysi Nové Veselí, které se zaměřuje na vnímání klubu v obci. Přibližně 77 % obyvatel městyse vnímá přítomnost klubu v obci pozitivně, kdy k největším benefitům řadí propagaci obce a sociální přesah sportovní komunity do společenského života obce.

Abstract:

The thesis analyzes the influence of a sports club on life in the town where it is located. The thesis aims to summarize existing resources dealing with this topic, and to identify possible positive and negative influences of successful sports clubs on town communities, using the example of the handball club TJ Sokol Nové Veselí. The identification is based on an analysis of publicly available data and interviews with local actors affected by the club's presence. The research has shown that the handball club affects town life in several ways. Some examples of a positive impact include good cooperation with the local basic school and engagement of children in sports activities, modernization of local sports venues and raising public awareness of the town across the Czech Republic. However, negative influences have been identified as well. These include the blocking of time slots in the sports hall at the expense of other teams or disadvantaging local players in junior categories. As part of the thesis, a questionnaire survey was conducted in the town of Nové Veselí to find out how the club is perceived by the public. Most citizens appreciate the presence of the club in the town, mentioning benefits such as promotion of the town across the country, and the effect the sports community has on the social life in the town.
