Grandparents in parents' role: Experience of foster grandmothers

Abstract:

Cílem této kvalitativní explorativní studie bylo porozumění zkušenosti babiček, které vychovávají v pěstounské péči vnouče nebo vnoučata, potomky svých dětí. S respondentkami byly realizovány polostrukturované rozhovory, které byly následně přepsány a analyzovány pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy (IPA). Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 10 žen, které mají v současné době v pěstounské péči alespoň jedno vnouče ve věku do 18 let. Výsledky analýzy jsou prezentovány ve formě esencí zkušenosti a dále ve formě oblastí a podtémat, které se ukázaly jako důležité pro porozumění zkušenosti. První oblast – „Minulost a přijetí vnoučete“ - zahrnuje přemýšlení o příčinách převzetí dítěte do péče, ale i vnímání přijetí dítěte jako samozřejmosti. Oblast „Potomek – rodič vnoučete jako klíčová součást zkušenosti“ se věnuje vztahu pěstounek s rodičem vnoučete, kontaktu vnoučete a rodiče a přemýšlení o něm. Oblast „Péče o vnouče“ popisuje prožívání péče a výchovy, propojení rolí babičky a maminky a také zdroje zátěže i zisky spojené s péčí. Poslední oblast „Přítomnost a budoucnost“ zahrnuje zdroje zvládání, celkový pohled na péči v současnosti i pohled do budoucna. Výsledky jsou diskutovány v kontextu dosavadních zjištění a jsou navrženy další směry pro následný výzkum.

Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative explorative study was to understand the authentic experience of grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren – offsprings of their children – in foster care. Semistructured interviews were conducted with participants, then they were transcribed and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The research sample included 10 women, who are raising in foster care at least one grandchild up to 18 years. Results of the analysis are presented as essences of experience and as domains and topics which proved to be important for understanding the experiences. First domain – „Past and placing of the child in care“ – includes thinking about the causes of placing of the child in care, but also perception of child’s acceptance as a matter of course or obligation. The domain „Offspring – the grandchild’s parent as a key component of the experience“ is focusing on the relationship of grandmothers and children’s parents, on the contact between grandchildren and their parents and on thinking about it. The domain „Caring for grandchild“ describes experience of care and upbringing, linking of mother and grandmother role, and sources of challenges and stresses as well as benefits connected with the care. Last domain „Presence and future“ includes sources of coping, overall view of care and vision of future. Results are discussed in context of existing findings and directions for future research are proposed.
