Patrick Modiano: La Petite Bijou. Aesthetics of the source text and its reflection in the translation (commented translation)

Abstract:

Předmětem této magisterské diplomové práce je pořídit překlad části románu La Petite Bijou francouzského spisovatele Patricka Modiana, který dosud nebyl přeložen do češtiny. Na základě poznatků z teorie překladu, teorie literatury a stylistické analýzy románu vytyčí stěžejní rysy textu, které se podílejí na estetice zdrojového díla tak, jak ji definoval Jean-René Ladmiral. Část práce je založena na hypotéze, že v románu La Petite Bijou hraje forma přinejmenším stejně důležitou roli jako obsah. K ověření této hypotézy poslouží i komparativní analýza slovenského překladu. Práce se rovněž zabývá zvolením nejvhodnějšího přístupu k překladu názvu románu, toponym a antroponym nebo dílčími překladatelskými problémy, které vyvstanou při překladu z francouzštiny do češtiny z důvodu strukturální odlišnosti obou jazyků.

Abstract:

The main purpose of this diploma thesis is the translation of an extract from the novel La Petite Bijou by Patrick Modiano, that has not been translated into Czech yet. The main stylistic characteristics creating the aesthetics of the source text are defined on the basis of different translation theories, the literary theory and the stylistic analysis of the novel. Jean-René Ladmiral’s theory is the theoretical framework for our analysis. The thesis deals with the following hypothesis: in the novel La Petite Bijou, the form is no less important than the content. To verify this hypothesis the comparative analysis of the Slovak translation of the novel is employed. The thesis also searches for the best approach to the translation of the novel’s title, as well as the translation of the toponyms and anthroponyms. Translation challenges faced by translators while translating from French to Czech emerging from the structural difference of these two languages are involved as well.
