Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této diplomové práce je prozkoumat nejčastěji používané termíny ve feministickém diskurzu ve USA s následným cílem poskytnout komplexní diachronické a synchronní studium lexikálních a sémantických aspektů těchto termínů. Pro dosažení cílů jsou používány kvantitativní a kvalitativní metody s důrazem na korpusovou analýzu. Teoretická část je věnována zkoumání nových progresivistických ideologií a následně se diskutuje o jejich vlivu na jazyk, aby se prokázala vzájemná propojenost. V praktické části je zkoumána etymologie, významový vývoj a současné užívání terminologie na základě teoretických poznatků a korpusové analýzy. Závěry dokazují, že kategorie nejfrekventovanějších termínů ve feministickém žargonu zahrnuje termíny s rozsáhlým sémantickým rozsahem, např. „patriarchát“ nebo „sexismus“, na rozdíl od konkrétnějších termínů jako „pro-choice“ nebo „sexuální souhlas.“ Kromě toho tyto výrazy vykazují převážně negativní konotace. Tato zjištění zdůrazňují povahu feminismu jako hnutí bojujícího proti genderové nerovnosti.

Abstract:

The main aim of this Master’s thesis is to investigate the most frequent terms within feminist discourse in the U.S., with a subsequent goal to provide comprehensive diachronic and synchronic examination of the lexical and semantics aspects of these terms. To fulfil the aims, quantitative and qualitative methods are employed, with emphasis on corpus-based analysis. The theoretical part is devoted to the exploration of new progressivist ideologies and, followingly, their impact on language is discussed to demonstrate mutual interconnectedness. Subsequently, in the practical part, etymology, evolution of meaning and current utilization of terminology are investigated, based on theoretical knowledge and corpus analysis. Finally, it was observed that the category of the most frequent terms within feminist jargon encompasses the ones with an extensive semantic range, e.g., “patriarchy” or “sexism”, in contrast to more specific expressions, such as “pro-choice” or “sexual consent”. Furthermore, these terms predominantly demonstrate negative connotations. In conclusion, the findings underscore the nature of feminism as a movement combating gender inequality.
