Variability of the Relationships between Time, Distance and Speed Perceptions of Movement (Doctoral Dissertation Proposition)

Abstract:

Vycházíme z předpokladu, že vnímání shora uvedených veličin jsou komplexní procesy, které jsou vzájemně úzce propojené. Jedná se o procesy dynamické, které lze rozvíjet a které jsou vedle biologických a psychických daností utvářeny společenskými formami a obsahy. Expozice standardních vizuálních podnětů byla realizována formou videozáznamů jízdy osobním automobilem se zabudovaným tempomatem. Byly pořízeny 3 digitální videozáznamy ve standardní délce časového trvání 375 s. Rychlost vozidla, které se pohybovalo na stejném úseku dráhy (který se úměrně prodlužoval), byla 30 km/h (dosažená vzdálenost 3 125 m), 60 km/h (6 250 m) a 90 km/h (9 375 m). Videozáznamy byly doplněny o expozice akustických signálů (tempo 50 BPM, 150 BPM). Byly zkoumány vztahy mezi odhady, přesností odhadů času, vzdálenosti a rychlosti jízdy, hodnocení jízdy atd. na 943 osobách (muži a ženy), ve věku 19 - 57 let, rozdělených do 11 skupin. Nejpřesnější odhady času se vyskytuji při rychlosti 60 km/h a tempu 50 BPM, což lze vysvětlit v souvislosti s obdobnou rychlostí v městském provozu a s příbuzností tempa se známým sekundovým členěním času. S věkem se zpřesňuje časový odhad a nadhodnocuje odhad rychlosti, ženy nadhodnocují ujetou vzdálenost. Na odhad rychlosti má zásadní vliv skutečná rychlost a interakce rychlosti a tempa 150 BPM. Odhad času je spojen s odhadem vzdálenosti, nemá prokazatelný vztah s odhadem rychlosti. Při rychlosti 90 km/h dochází k výraznému podhodnocení odhadu rychlosti. Zvyšující se přesvědčení o správnosti vlastního odhadu rychlosti souvisí se snižující se přesností tohoto odhadu.

Abstract:

The thesis is based on the assumption that subjective perception of the above stated variables is complex process, and the relationships between time, distance and speed of movement are closely interdependent. They are dynamic processes which can be further developed and which are conditioned, apart from biological and mental constants, by social norms and values. The exposition of standard visual inputs was realized in the form of video recordings of a passenger view of a car drive in a car with an in-built cruise control. Three digital video recordings were taken in the standardized length of 375 seconds. The speed of the vehicle which moved along the same road section (extending proportionally with the speed) was set to 30 kph (with distance covered 3.125 m), 60 kph (distance covered 6.250 m) and 90 kph (distance covered 9.375 m). The video recordings were complemented with recordings of acoustic signals (at the tempo of 50 BPM or 150 BPM). The relations between the time, distance and speed estimates, their relative accuracy, subjective evaluations of the drive etc. were examined on 943 people (male and female) between 19 – 57 years of age, divided into 11 groups. The most accurate estimates of time were found to be at the speed of 60 kph and tempo of 50 BPM, which can be explained by the closeness to a typical speed experienced in urban traffic and the similarity of the tempo to the established division of a minute into 60 seconds. With growing age of the subjects the time estimate gets more accurate while the speed estimate tends to be overrated; females have a tendency to overrate the distance covered. The speed estimate is majorly influenced by the real speed together with the interaction of speed and the tempo of 150 BPM. The time estimate is connected to the distance estimate; it has no demonstrable relation to the speed estimate. There occurs a distinct underrating of the distance estimate at the speed of 90 kph. With the growing conviction of the accuracy of one’s speed estimate the real accuracy of the estimate decreases.
