Abstract:

Diplomová práce ´Semantic Reference to a Woman: Linguistic Determinism and Male Dominance´ vychází z teorie ´lingvistického determinismu´. Základní hypotézou je tvrzení, že jazyk utváří myšlenku. Skrze vžité jazykové stereotypy může být některá společenská skupina diskriminována. Druhou výchozí hypotézou je feministická teorie ´mužské dominance´ v jazyce. Práce se konkrétně zaměřuje na rozdíly v nejčastějších kolokacích adjektiv se substantivy ´man´ a ´woman´ a tendence v používání generického ´man´. Generické maskulinum bývá často podvědomě vnímáno jako rodově specifické, takže znevýhodňuje ženy. Důležitým tématem je také vzájemná souvislost mezi zmíněnými jazykovými jevy a vnímáním mužského a ženského genderu s ohledem na nerovné postavení žen a mužů ve společnosti.

Abstract:

The master thesis ´Semantic Reference to a Woman: Linguistic Determinism and Male Dominance´ emanates from the theory of ´linguistic determinism´. The hypothesis states that language shapes thought. A social group may be discriminated based on established language stereotypes. The other underlying hypothesis is the feminist theory of ´male dominance´ in language. In particular, the thesis focuses on differences in prevalent adjective collocations with substantives ´man´ a ´woman´ and tendencies in usage of generic ´man´. Generic masculine is often subconciously decoded as gender-specific and thus disadvantages women. An important theme is the reciprocal relation of the described language phenomena and perception of male and female gender with respect to unequal social status of women and men.
