The age factor in learning a new language: Is there any hope for adults?

Abstract:

Cílem studie je zjistit, zda věk může být překážkou úspěchu při učení se cizímu jazyku. Byl učiněn pokus odpovědět na dvě otázky. První otázkou je, jakým výzvám čelí studenti jazyků v této skupině a jaké faktory urychlují proces osvojování jazyka. Účastníky této studie je 16 absolventů vysokých škol, kteří mají v úmyslu emigrovat do Ameriky a Kanady. Výzkumná metoda je kvalitativní a data byla sbírána prostřednictvím jednotlivých rozhovorů. Rozhovory byly nahrávány, přepisovány a kódovány. Výsledky výzkumu ukázaly, že dospělí studenti jazyků mohou být také úspěšní, i když v tomto procesu čelí výzvám, ale dospělí studenti jazyků mohou tento proces urychlit pomocí některých faktorů. Výsledky výzkumu ukazují, že jediný faktor nemůže vést k úspěchu a že všechny faktory jsou vzájemně propojeny, ale hnací silou procesu učení je silná motivace.

Abstract:

The purpose of the study is to find out if age can be a barrier to success in learning a foreign language. An attempt has been made to answer two questions. The first question is what challenges the language learners in this group face and what factors accelerate the language acquisition process. The participants of this study are 16 college graduates who intend to immigrate to America and Canada. The research method is qualitative, and data was collected through individual interviews. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded. The results of the research showed that adult language learners can also be successful, even though they face challenges in the process, but adult language learners can accelerate this process through the use of some factors. The research results show that a single factor cannot lead to success and that all factors are interrelated, but the driving force of the learning process is strong motivation.
