The "Africanist Presence" in the work of Poe, Hemingway and O´Connor

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the analysis and interpretation of Toni Morrison's theory of the so-called "Africanist presence," which the author describes in her book Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination. The aim of this thesis is to describe the theory and apply it to selected works by Edgar Allan Poe, Ernest Hemingway, and Flannery O'Connor. The thesis consists of the theoretical part, devoted to the theory's explanation, and the practical part, which explores the "Africanist presence" in one selected work of the above-mentioned authors.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou a interpretací literární teorie výskytu tzv. "Africanist presence" v dílech bílých amerických autorů, kterou popisuje ve svém díle Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination Toni Morrisonová. Cílem práce je popsat autorčinu teorii a posléze ji aplikovat na vybrané povídky od Edgara Allana Poea, Ernesta Hemingwaye a Flannery O'Connorové. Práce se skládá z teoretické části, která se věnuje vysvětlení teorie, a praktické části, zkoumající "Africanist presence" v jednom z děl výše zmíněných amerických autorů.
