The Fear of Growing Up: Victorian Gender Roles and Norms in J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na analýzu díla Peter Pan (1988) autora J. M. Barrie ve vztahu k genderovým a sociálním normám viktoriánské Anglie. Rozbor hlavních postav románu, Petera a Wendy, se soustředí na to, jak tyto postavy odpovídají zmíněným normám a očekáváním. Ze stejného hlediska jsou taktéž zkoumáni rodiče Wendy, Kapitán Hook a ženské postavy, které obývají Zemi Nezemi. Analýza zohledňuje vztahy mezi postavami a to, jak se vzájemně ovlivňují. Kromě toho představuje hodnotu, která byla v té době přisuzována matce, a způsob, jakým Barrie tuto hodnotu popsal v románu, jak v rámci prostředí Země Nezemě, tak i mimo ní.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan (1988) regarding the gender and social norms of Victorian England. The breakdown of the novel’s main characters, Peter and Wendy, concentrates on how these characters conform to said norms and expectations. Wendy’s parents, Captain Hook and the female characters who inhabit Neverland are also inspected through the same lens. The analysis also considers the relationships between the characters and their reciprocal influences. Further, it showcases the value appointed to a mother at the time and how Barrie described it in the novel, outside and within the environment he created in Neverland.
