Beekeeping as an Act of Care: the case of women beekeepers in Czechia

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá motivace a žitou zkušenost žen včelařek v České republice. Zachycuje ji prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných kvalitativních rozhovorů s různorodou skupinou respodentek. Pojednává o včelaření a s ním souvisejících aktivitách jako o aktu péče, kterou včelařky projevují své rodině, okolí, životnímu prostředí a samy sobě. Reflektuje jejich činnost v kontextu historie a současnosti ženského včelaření, role žen v zemědělství, environmentálního dopadu včelaření a antropomorfismu hmyzu. Práce tak doplňuje a prohlubuje poznání o specificitě doposud akademicky marginalizované skupiny žen včelařek, jejichž většina se věnuje včelaření jako hobby.

Abstract:

The study examines the motivation and lived experience of women beekeepers in the Czech Republic. It records it through semi-structured qualitative interviews with a diverse group of respondents. The study analyses beekeeping and its associated activities as an act of care that beekeepers show to their families, communities, natural environment, and themselves. It reflects their activity in the context of history and present-day women’s beekeeping, women’s role in agriculture, environmental impact of beekeeping, and insect anthropomorphism. Thus, the study complements and deepens existing knowledge about the specificity of women beekeepers, who are still an academically marginalised demographic, especially if they keep bees as a hobby.
