Detection of ionizing radiation using PIN diodes

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo prostudování principu detekce ionizujícího záření s použitím polovodičových PIN diod, výběr vhodných komerčně dostupných PIN diod a navržení zapojení, schopného ionizující záření detekovat. Komerčně dostupné detektory ionizujícího záření bývají drahé a složité, alternativou pro tyto drahé, ale přesné detektory je levný, čistě elektronický a jednoduchý detektor, schopný uživatele informovat o dopadajícím ionizujícím záření. Zařízení bylo navrženo na napájení z USB konektoru a zpracování elektrického signálu vytvářeného na PIN diodě pomocí nábojového zesilovače, registrování signálu vnějším přerušením mikrokontroléru a signalizaci pomocí připojeného počítače nebo LED na DPS. Podle provedených simulací lze usoudit, že nábojový zesilovač je schopný zesílit velmi malé proudové impulsy vytvářené na PIN diodě a tím detekovat vysoce energetické ionizující záření. Vytvořený detektor se prezentuje jako levná alternativa pro detekci ionizujících záření vyšších energií, zejména záření a .

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis was to study the principles of detection of ionising radiation with the use of PIN diodes, selection of suitable commercially available PIN diodes and designing an electronic circuit, which is able to detect ionising radiation. Commercially available detectors of ionising radiation are often expensive and complex, the alternative to these expensive, but precise detectors is an inexpensive, electronical and simple detector, that is able to inform the user of ionising radiation interacting with the detector. The device was designed to be powered by a USB connector, to be able to process an electrical signal, which is being created by the PIN diode, using a charge amplifier, which is able to generate an external interrupt on a connected microcontroller. The ionising radiation is visualised to the user by a connected computer or a LED located on the PCB. According to the simulations, we can conclude, that the charge amplifier is able to amplify a very small current pulses, created by the PIN diode and therefore detect highly energetic ionising radiation. The designed detector is presenting itself as an inexpensive alternative in detection of ionising radiation, especially and radiation.
