Abstract:

The thesis "Global Mobility: Exploring the Dynamics of Expatriation, Repatriation, and Factors Influencing the Success of International Assignments" investigates the intricate dynamics surrounding expatriation and repatriation processes while analyzing the various factors that influence the challenges and success of international assignments. Through an extensive literature review, the thesis establishes a theoretical framework, laying the groundwork for understanding the complexities of global mobility. Key terms such as expatriate management, assignment success, and repatriation are defined, providing a comprehensive overview of the research landscape. Moreover, the research employs a qualitative methodology, primarily consisting of expert interviews, to gain deep insights into the challenges and success factors experienced by expatriates. This approach was chosen to capture the nuanced perspectives and experiences of individuals who have undergone international assignments. Furthermore, the empirical investigation focuses on interviewing expatriates who have completed international assignments within the last decade. These interviews explore various aspects, including the selection process, preparation, adaptation to new environments, family considerations, language barriers, and challenges during repatriation. The analysis of the interview data was based on a qualitative content analysis, aiming to identify common themes and patterns among the expatriates' experiences. The findings shed light on critical success factors, such as personal characteristics, organizational support mechanisms, and strategies for overcoming challenges. Overall, the thesis contributes to the existing body of knowledge by offering a deeper understanding of the dynamics of global mobility and providing practical insights for organizations aiming to enhance the success of their international assignments.
