Cultural Hegemony and Pop music in the Period of "Normalization"

Abstract:

Práce zasazuje koncept kulturní hegemonie A. Gramsciho do období normalizace v Československu. Sleduje způsob, jakým docházelo ke kontrole většinové společnosti prostřednictvím aktivního prezentování intelektuálních, morálních a ideologických principů v oblasti masové kultury a masového umění. Analýza vybraných děl populární kultury a zejména populární hudby odhaluje, popisuje a zobecňuje prostředky, kterých bylo užito k tomuto cíli. Zkoumá dopad těchto tendencí na celek mainstreamové tvorby, přičemž je v práci zohledněna i tvorba alternativní, která byla establishmentem označována jako kontrakulturní a nežádoucí. Tato tvorba je tedy v kontextu této práce kontrahegemonní.

Abstract:

This thesis puts the concept of A. Gramsci´s hegemony into the period of normalization in Czechoslovakia. It looks at how the majority of society was controlled by active presentation of intellectual, moral and ideological principals in mass culture and mass art. The analysis of selected pop culture works reveals, describes and generalizes the means which were used to reach this aim. It examines the effect of these tendencies on the mainstream production as a whole in contrast to alternative production which was labelled as contra-cultural, against ideology and therefore unwelcome. This production is in the context of this thesis contrahegemonic.
