The Potential of Virtual Reality to Support Social Presence in Distance Education

Abstract:

Distanční vzdělávání je vzdělávací formou, jež nabízí mnohé výhody, například časovou a prostorou flexibilitu, avšak ze své podstaty bývá v porovnání s jinými formami studia oslabena v rovině sociální. Tato práce zkoumá tzv. sociální přítomnost coby aspekt sociální roviny, jež se ukazuje jako zásadní pro navazování užších sociálních vazeb, podpory spolupráce či kultivaci pocitu sounáležitosti. Sociální přítomnost je v práci zkoumána v souvislosti s využitím virtuální reality, zaměřuje se na identifikaci klíčových prvků virtuální reality, které posilují sociální přítomnost, jako například interaktivní avatary a prostorový zvuk. Kromě toho práce identifikuje blokátory, které omezují sociální přítomnost, včetně technických omezení, uživatelského nepohodlí či nedůvěryhodnosti podoby avatarů. Práce poskytuje teoretický exkurz do distančního vzdělávání, sociální přítomnosti i virtuální reality. Empirické šetření, realizované prostřednictvím focus groups se studenty distančního programu, přináší informace o projevech sociální přítomnosti ve virtuální realitě, prvcích virtuální reality, které sociální přítomnost podporují i blokují. Celkově si práce klade za cíl přispět k pochopení toho, jak může virtuální realita obohatit sociální přítomnost v distančním vzdělávání.

Abstract:

The thesis explores the potential of virtual reality in supporting social presence within the context of distance education. The nature of distance education has provided learners with flexible and accessible opportunities, but it often lacks the social aspect found in traditional forms of education. Social presence, defined as the subjective perception of self and others, is crucial in establishing connections, fostering collaboration, and cultivating a sense of belonging among learners. The thesis investigates the manifestations of social presence in virtual reality and identifies key features that enhance social presence, such as interactive avatars and spatialized sound. Additionally, the thesis uncovers blockers that limit social presence, including technical constraints, user discomfort, and the lack of realism in avatars. The theoretical framework examines the foundations of distance education, the social dimension of distance education, and the potential of virtual reality technology. The empirical investigation, conducted through a focus group, provides insights into students' experiences engaging in joint activities within virtual reality. Overall, the thesis aims to contribute to understanding how virtual reality can enrich social presence in distance education and offers valuable insights for designing and implementing immersive and socially engaging learning experiences.
