Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce si primárně ukládá za cíl prokázat interakci československých nonkonformních autorů se Západem v době normalizace a na vymezených kategoriích demonstrovat možnosti, které byly k prezentaci a distribuci umění konceptuálních tendencí 70. let navzdory politickému režimu využívány, ozřejmit tyto různé projevy na pomezí oficiálního umění a privátní sféry a uvést nosné příklady. Pro pochopení podmínek neoficiální umělecké tvorby československých autorů je vhodná rovněž komparace této neinstitucionalizované kultury se vznikem institucionální kritiky na Západě a zjištění, zda a jaké mohla mít podněty kritika institucionalizace a komercionalizace v normalizačních podmínkách. Na základě dobových ohlasů v domácích periodikách a reflexe autorů také vymezí zásadní výstavy konceptuálních tendencí v Evropě a stanoví, čím všeobecně deklarovaná první evropská konceptuální výstava Live in Your Head: When Attitudes become Form: Works, Concepts, Processes, Situations, Information v prvenství předčila výstavy, které jí předcházely a o nichž tehdejší tisk téměř neinformoval. Analýzou zpráv v zahraničním tisku, publikací a důkazů výstavní činnosti se pak pokusí vyvrátit domněnku o obousměrné nepropustnosti zpráv (nejen) o umění konceptuálních tendencí skrze železnou oponu. Zabývá se rovněž otázkou narušení dominance západního umění a problematikou revize historie umění druhé poloviny 20. století ve zpětném přijetí východoevropského umění do světových dějin.

Abstract:

This Master’s degree thesis sets out to chart the interaction of Czechoslovak non-conformist artists with the West in the normalization period and to demonstrate, on selected categories, the possibilities employed, despite the ruling political regime, in the presentation and distribution of the art of conceptual tendencies of the 1970s. The author analyses these varied expressions between official and private art and gives some illustrative examples. To understand the conditions of unofficial art in Czechoslovakia, the comparison of this non-institutionalized culture with the rise of institutional criticism in the West is instructive, as well as the information about the possible stimuli for the criticism of institutionalization and commercionalization under normalization, and what they were. Based on period responses in Czech magazines and artists’ reflections, the paper also lists the key exhibitions of conceptual tendencies in Europe and explains in what the generally recognised first European conceptual exhibition Live in Your Head: When Attitudes become Form: Works, Concepts, Processes, Situations, Information surpassed those preceding it, scarcely covered by the period press. Using the analysis of articles from the foreign press, publications and evidence of exhibition activities, the thesis further seeks to disprove the idea that due to the existence of the Iron Curtain, information (not only) about art of conceptual tendencies could not be transmitted between the East and the West. It also discusses the issue of the disturbed dominance of western art and the revision of art history in the second half of the 20th century, reflected in the re-corporation of East-European art in world history.
