The role of religious ideologies in the political and legal sphere: The case of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o wahhábismu, sunnitském reformním a obrodném hnutí, jenž bylo založeno v polovině 18. století. Cílem práce je objasnit vliv náboženské ideologie v historii Saúdské Arábie a vymezit její roli v politické a právní sféře. Za hlavní výzkumnou metodu je zvolena interpretativní jednopřípadová studie, jejíž úlohou je poskytnout hlubší porozumění vlivu wahhábismu na politický a justiční systém Saúdské Arábie. Dílčí metodou je Hofstedeho typologie kultur, která pomůže lépe pochopit tamější společenské a politické uspořádání. Pomocí kvalitativně-interpretativní metody bude objasněno, jak zásadní vliv měl wahhábismus na vývoj bilaterální vztahů s USA a jaký případný dopad měla koalice mezi státy na samotný wahhábismus. Práce vychází z hypotézy, že tato forma islámu je významnou součástí tamější společnosti a má výrazný vliv na politickou a právní sféru Saúdské Arábie.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis is about Wahhabism, a Sunni reform and revivalist movement, founded in the middle of the 18th century. The aim of the thesis is to clarify the influence of religious ideology in the history of Saudi Arabia and to define its role in the political and legal sphere. An interpretative single-case study is chosen as the main research method, its role is to give a deeper insight into the influence of Wahhabism on political and judical system of Saudi Arabia. One of the submethods is Hofstede’s typology of cultures, which will help to better understand social and political organization in the country. Using the qualitative-interpretive method, it will be clarified how essential influence Wahhabism had on the development of bilateral relations with the USA and what possible impact the coalition between the states had on Wahhabism itself. The work is based on the hypothesis that this form of Islam is an eminent part of the local society and has a significant influence on the political and legal sphere of Saudi Arabia.
