Motivating Students: Challenges and Opportunities of Distance Education in the Second Language Classroom

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá způsoby, jakými učitelé angličtiny na středních školách motivují své žáky v distanční výuce. Je zaměřena na učitele středních zdravotnických škol. Zkoumá podmínky, ve kterých učitelé vyučují během distanční výuky, výzvy a příležitosti jež distanční výuka nabízí. Cílem této práce bylo popsat způsoby, jakými učitelé motivují své žáky v distanční výuce a zdali se liší od motivování žáku ve třídě. Zaměřuje se rovněž na případné odlišnosti v motivování žáků středních zdravotnických škol od motivování žáků gymnázií. Ke sběru dat byla využita platforma Zoom, a proběhl formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se čtyřmi učitelkami angličtiny ze středních zdravotnických škol a jednou učitelkou gymnázia. Data z rozhovorů byla zpracována pomocí otevřeného a axiálního kódování. Analýza dat vyústila v identifikaci tří kategorií motivačních strategií – sociální prezence, spokojenost studenta a jazyk. Tyto kategorie se následně dělí na konkrétnější podkategorie. Učitelé účastnící se této studie zaznamenali zvýšení potřeby sociálního kontaktu u svých žáků během distanční výuky. Motivační strategie zaměřené na uspokojení této potřeby jsou: vytvoření prostoru pro neformální konverzaci v online hodinách, dostupnost na sociálních sítích, odezva), detailní zpětná vazba (feedback) k úkolům a zadávání skupinové práce. Učitelé se snaží zvýšit spokojenost u demotivovaných studentů ve svých třídách užitím následujících motivačních strategií: zapracováním zájmů žáků do výuky, používání různých forem humoru a oceňování žáků nejen za správné odpovědi, ale i za snahu a aktivitu. Tyto motivační strategie byli zpracovány do pedagogických implikací pro praxi. Pro hlubší porozumění a zvýšení validity byly výsledky porovnány s výsledky jiných podobných studií. Tohle porovnání odhalilo, že účastníci této výzkumné práce nepřisuzují vnějším odměnám, např. známky či body, velkou motivační hodnotu, na rozdíl od jiných studií.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the ways teachers of English at secondary schools motivate their students in distance education. Its main focus is on teachers at secondary nursing schools. It explores teaching conditions in distance education and its challenges and opportunities. The aim of the study was to investigate the ways teachers motivate students in distance education, whether it is different from motivating students in traditional classroom environment and whether motivating students of secondary nursing schools is different from motivating students of grammar schools. Four teachers of English at secondary nursing schools and one teacher at grammar school participated in semi-structured interviews conducted via Zoom videoconferencing platform. The data from the interviews were analyzed using open and axial coding and resulted in three categories of motivating strategies – social presence, learner satisfaction and language, which are then divided into more concrete sub-categories. The participating teachers identified heightened need of social contact in their students during distance education. Creating a space for informal conversation in online lessons, being available on social networks, responding promptly, giving detailed feedback and assigning group work are motivational strategies addressing this need. The participating teachers try to increase the learner satisfaction in the demotivated students they often encounter. They use the following motivational strategies for this purpose: including students´ interests in lessons, using humour in various forms and praising students for right answers but also for effort and activity. These motivational strategies teachers reported to be using are processed into pedagogical implications for practice. The results of this thesis are compared with the results of similar studies to gain more insight and increase validity. A distinctive finding which emerged from the comparison is that the participants in this research study do not consider extrinsic rewards, such as grades or points, to be of motivational value for their students.
