A Modern Man against Superstitions. The Two Realistic Novels of Jorge R. Ritter.

Abstract:

This work, as a part of its title, A Modern Man against Superstitions, suggests, deals with the modern man and his relationship to superstitions. In the theoretical part, it focuses on the notion of superstition, explains its essence and meaning and it also takes into account the relationship of superstition and religion. Afterwards, it explains what we mean by the concept of the modern man and his basic typical features. It also engages in the Galician scholar B. J. Feijoo, whom we consider to be the first modern, righteous opponent of all kinds of the superstitions. In the next part we study the Spanish term curanderismo which a Paraguayan writer Jorge Rodolfo Ritter, the author of the two works we deal with, El pecho y la espalda and La hosta y los jinetes, attacks most of all and puts it in touch with ignorance, as the main culprit of the underdevelopment of Paraguay and the medieval thinking of its inhabitants. An attention is also paid to the author's motherland, as well as to the vital moments of his life and the basic description of his three novels. Subsequently, the practical part offers the views of the main protagonists of our two works, Dr. Reyes and the priest Ulloa, on the main problems described in them. In El pecho y la espalda the problems are perceived by the prism of the modern man, i.e. we present Dr. Reyes, his observing activity, his criticism and his attempt to correct them. La hostia y los jinetes focuses on the troubles of the Church.

Abstract:

Tato práce, jak již naznačuje její název, tedy Moderní člověk proti pověrám, se věnuje novodobému člověku a jeho vztahu k pověře. V teoretické části se zaměřujeme na pojem pověra, vysvětlujeme jeho podstatu a význam a zohledňujeme také jeho vztah k náboženství. Následně vysvětlujeme, jak vnímáme spojení moderní člověk a jaké jsou jeho základní typické rysy. Představujeme také osobnost galicijského učence B. J. Feija, kterého považujeme za prvního moderního striktního odpůrce všech druhů pověr. V další části práce zkoumáme španělský termín curanderismo, česky léčitelství, který paraguayský spisovatel Jorge Rodolfo Ritter, jež je autorem obou děl, kterým se věnujeme, tedy El pecho y la espalda a La hostia y los jinetes, napadá ze všech nejvíce a dává jej do souvislosti s neznalostí, tedy ignorancí, jakožto hlavním viníkem zaostalosti Paraguaye a středověkého myšlení jejich obyvatel. Pozornost věnujeme také samotné vlasti autora, stejně tak jako zásadním momentům jeho života a základnímu popisu jeho tří novel. Část praktická představuje pohled hlavních představitelů dvou vybraných děl, doktora Reyese a kněze Ulloy, na hlavní problémy v nich popsané. V díle El pecho y la espalda je na dané problémy nahlíženo prizmatem moderního člověka, tzn. prezentujeme doktora Reyese a jeho činnost observační, jeho kritiku a snahu o nápravu zmíněných překážek. La hostia y los jinetes se pak soustředí především na těžkosti církve.
