Simulation Method for Development of Communicative Competence in English for Specific Purposes in Students of College of Healthcare and Nursing

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá výzkumem rozvoje komunikační kompetence v odborném anglickém jazyce metodou simulace u studentů vyšší odborné školy zdravotnické. Jejím cílem je ověřit použitelnost metody simulace při výuce odborného anglického jazyka k rozvoji komunikační kompetence studentů, posílení jejich aktivního podílu na procesu učení a zjistit postoje studentů k používání této výukové metody. Základem výzkumu je podrobné rozpracování teoreticko-metodologických východisek v oblasti komunikační kompetence, zdravotnické angličtiny a simulace jako výukové metody. Pro vlastní výzkum byl zvolen kvantitativní přístup s využitím experimentu ve třídě na vzorku 102 studentů. Pro použití ve vlastním experimentu bylo vypracováno deset podrobných simulačních úloh z oblasti zdravotnické angličtiny. Jako výzkumné nástroje byly použity dotazníky, písemný test, počítačový adaptabilní test a ústní zkoušení. Kromě vlastních výsledků studentů byly monitorovány i jejich názory na výuku pomocí simulací a jejich vliv na rozvoj všech oblastí komunikační kompetence. Data byla statisticky zpracována, testována, interpretována a zasazena do kontextu souvisejících výzkumů. Z výsledků vyplývá, že výuka metodou simulace má významný vliv na rozvoj komunikační kompetence studentů a učení se touto metodou studenty baví a motivuje. V závěru jsou navrženy další oblasti a možnosti výzkumu výukových simulací a předloženo doporučení pro učitele jak začlenit metodu simulace do praktické výuky.

Abstract:

The doctoral dissertation deals with the research carried out in communicative competence development by simulation method in English for Specific Purposes in students of the Brno College of Healthcare and Nursing. The aim of the thesis is to verify the usage of simulation methods for development of communicative competence, increase in students‘ active participation in the learning process and their attitude towards learning by this teaching method. The basis of the research is a detailed insight into the theoretical and methodological foundations of the concept of communicative competence, into Medical English and into the area of simulation as a teaching method. The approach to the research was quantitative and questionnaires, written test, computerised adaptive test and oral testing were used as research tools on the sample of 102 informants. Ten detailed simulation tasks were created for the use in the research. The research employed a method of experiment in a classroom environment. Students’ opinions on the simulation method usage and on their own improvement of communicative competence skills were also monitored. All of the data was statistically evaluated and interpreted in the context of related research. The results show that the simulation method has significant influence not only on the development of communicative competence but also on motivation and positive attitude of students towards learning of English for Specific Purposes. Further areas and possibilities of research in the field of simulation method are suggested in the conclusion as well as recommendation for teachers on how to employ the simulation method into the practical teaching and learning process.
