Our image in the eyes of others in the novels of Milan Kundera

Abstract:

The thesis describes the development of poetic of Milan Kundera's novels, especially on the basis of one of his key themes: our image in the eyes of others. First it examines the issues from a philosophical (mainly based on the ideas of Paul Ricœr) and socio-psychological (in this case he relies mainly on the work of Zygmunt Bauman and Gilles Lipovetsky) point of view. Then the thesis deals with Kundera's novels from the first two author´s creative "cycles" (The Joke, Laughable Loves, Life is Elsewhere, The Farewell Waltz, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Immortality) and observes different perceptions and adaptations of the theme “our image in the eyes of others”, especially by focusing on one of the characters in all novels. Knowledge of particular novels and cycles of novels are continuously being compared. At the end it tries to affect the extent to which the subject, together with it the whole author's manuscript, has been developed by Kundera over time.

Abstract:

Práce popisuje vývoj poetiky románů Milana Kundery, zejména na základě jednoho ze stěžejních Kunderových témat: náš obraz v očích ostatních. Nejprve vymezuje tuto problematiku z hlediska filozofického (zde se zabývá převážně myšlenkami Paula Ricœra) a sociologicko-psychologického (zde se opírá o práce Zygmunta Baumana a Gillese Lipovetskeho). Dále postupně zkoumá Kunderovy romány z prvních dvou tvůrčích „cyklů“ (Žert, Směšné lásky, Život je jinde, Valčík na rozloučenou, Kniha smíchu a zapomnění, Nesnesitelná lehkost bytí a Nesmrtelnost) a nahlíží proměny pojetí a zpracování tématu našeho obrazu v očích ostatních, přičemž se u každého románu výrazněji zaměřuje vždy na jednu z postav. Průběžně poznatky z jednotlivých románů a románových cyklů porovnává a v závěru se pak pokouší postihnout, nakolik se dané téma s postupem času u Kundery rozvinulo (a jak se spolu s ním rozvinul celý jeho autorský rukopis).
