Ecology of freshwater molluscs and their small scale distribution

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá ekologií sladkovodních měkkýšů stojatých vod a jejich maloškálovou distribucí. V první části rešerše jsou shrnuty a popsány faktory ovlivňující distribuci, druhovou bohatost a abundance jednotlivých druhů sladkovodních měkkýšů. Tyto faktory jsou: úživnost/trofie, chemismus, substrát, hloubka, kyslík, teplota, nadmořská výška reprezentující klima, predace, kompetice, rozloha a izolovanost vodních těles. V druhé části rešerše jsou shrnuty poznatky o maloškálové distribuci, tedy distribuce v rámci jednoho vodního tělesa. Je definován termín mikrostanoviště a shrnuty poznatky o problematice mikrostanovišť. Dále je popsáno mikrostanoviště jako místo definované typem substrátu. Cílem praktické části byl semikvantitavní sběr vodních měkkýšů z 20 ploch na rybnících Malá a Prostřední Houkvice a stanovení parametrů jednotlivých stanovišť, pomocí kterých by se dala vysvětlit maloškálová distribuce. Důležitým sledovaným faktorem byl rozdíl mezi osluněnými a zastíněnými vzorkovacími plochami. Celkově bylo na rybnících Malá a Prostřední Houkvice nalezeno 20 druhů vodních měkkýšů (sedm mlžů a 13 plžů). Celkový počet nalezených jedinců byl 1454, z toho bylo 592 odchyceno živých. Jako signifikantní (při použití Spearmanova korelačního testu) se pro vysvětlení maloškálové distribuce ukázala mocnost a hrubost sedimentu. Důležitý byl také rozdíl mezi osluněnými a zastíněnými stanovišti, kdy více měkkýšů obývalo osluněné plochy. Tento rozdíl by signifikantní pouze v rámci Prostřední Houkvice (při použití Mann-Whitneyho U testu).

Abstract:

This work deals with the ecology of freshwater molluscs in standing water bodies and their small scale distribution. In the first part of the review, I describe and summarize the influential factors regarding the distribution, the species richness and the abundancy of individual species of freshwater molluscs. These factors are: trophy, chemistry, substrate, depth, oxygen, temperature, climate representing altitude, predation, competition, area and isolation of water bodies. In the second part, I go over what is known about small scale distribution, i.e. within a single water body. The term microhabitat is defined and the knowledge regarding it are summarized. Furthermore, I describe microhabitat as a place defined by the type of the substrate. The goal of the empirical part was to put together a semiquantitative collection of freshwater molluscs from 20 distinct sites in the ponds of Malá Houkvice and Prostřední Houkvice, and to determine parameters of the individual sites, through which it would be possible to explain the small scale distribution. The difference between the sunlit areas and the areas hidden in the shadow was an important explanatory factor. In total, I found 20 distinct species of water molluscs (seven bivalves and 13 gastropods) in the ponds of Malá Houkvice and Prostřední Houkvice. The total number of collected specimen was 1454, out of which 592 were caught alive. Sediment thickness and roughness proved to be significant (using Spearman's correlations) to explain the small scale distribution. The difference between sunlit and shadowy sites was also important, with higher numbers of molluscs recorded at the sunlit plots. In the Prostřední Houkovice, it even turned out to be statistically significant (using Mann-Whitney U Test).
