Fauna of phytophagous arthropods in the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden of Masaryk University in Brno

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje fauně fytofágních členovců ve sklenících Botanické zahrady Přírodovědecké fakulty Masarykovy univerzity se zvláštním zřetelem ke škůdcům skleníků a pokojových rostlin. První část práce je rešeršní a pojednává o nejčastěji se vyskytujících skupinách škůdců rostlin ve sklenících a domácnostech. Obsahuje základní obecnou charakteristiku červců (Hemiptera: Coccoidea), molic (Hemiptera: Aleyrodoidea), mšic (Hemiptera: Aphidoidea), třásnokřídlých (Thysanoptera), fytofágních roztočů (Acari) a smutnic (Diptera: Sciaridae), včetně přehledu hospodářsky nejvýznamnějších druhů a praktických opatření k ochraně pěstovaných rostlin. Druhá část zahrnuje komentovaný seznam druhů fytofágních členovců zjištěných ve sklenících Botanické zahrady MU vlastním sběrem převážně v letech 2012–2013. Celkem bylo nalezeno 13 druhů fytofágního hmyzu a roztočů, a to 8 druhů červců, 2 druhy molic, 1 druh třásněnky, 1 saprofytofágní druh smutnice a jeden druh svilušky. Z červců byla ve sklenících nejhojnější čeleď Pseudococcidae, zejména druhy Planococcus citri a Pseudococcus longispinus (ojediněle se vyskytoval též Pseudococcus viburni), dále byly zastoupeny též čeledi Coccidae (Coccus hesperidum, Saissetia oleae) a Diaspididae (Aspidiotus nerii, Diaspis boisduvalii, Diaspis coccois). Z molic se hojně vyskytoval druh Trialeurodes vaporariorum, zatímco Bemisia tabaci, nalezená ve sklenících MU v předchozích letech, nebyla v letech 2012–2013 potvrzena. Třásněnka Frankliniella occidentalis a sviluška Tetranychus cf. urticae byly zjištěny ojediněle, a to každá pouze na jedné živné rostlině. Hojně se vyskytující dospělci smutnice Bradysia ocellaris byli detekováni pomocí lepových desek. Součástí bakalářské práce je také návrh posteru a informačního letáku, určených pro veřejnost (návštěvníky skleníků Botanické zahrady PřF MU).

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis deals with the fauna of phytophagous arthropods in the greenhouses at the Faculty of Natural Science at Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic). Special attention is paid to pests of greenhouse- and houseplants. The first part of the thesis provides a review on the most common groups of plant pests which can be found in greenhouses and households. It contains basic characteristics of scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea), whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodoidea), aphids (Hemiptera: Aphidoidea), thrips (Thysanoptera), phytophagous mites (Acari) and dark-winged fungus gnats (Diptera: Sciaridae), including an overview of economically most significant pest species and practical recommendations for plant protection. The second part includes an annotated list of species of phytophagous arthropods in the greenhouses of the Botanical garden at Masaryk University based on material collected mainly in 2012–2013. Altogether 13 species of phytophagous insects and mites were found, namely 8 species of scale insects, 2 species of whiteflies, 1 species of thrips, 1 saprophytophagous species of dark-winged fungus gnats, and one species of spider mite. From scale insects, the most common family was Pseudococcidae, notably the species Planococcus citri and Pseudococcus longispinus (another species, Pseudococcus viburni, occurred only sporadically). The families Coccidae and Diaspididae were represented by Coccus hesperidum, Saissetia oleae, and Aspidiotus nerii, Diaspis boisduvalii and Diaspis coccois, respectively. From whiteflies, Trialeurodes vaporariorum was abundant, while Bemisia tabaci, known from the greenhouses of the Masaryk University in previous years, was not confirmed in 2012–2013. The thrips Frankliniella occidentalis and the spider mite Tetranychus cf. urticae occurred only sporadically, each on only one host plant. Numerous adults of the dark-winged fungus gnat Bradysia ocellaris were detected by sticky traps. The thesis also contains proposals of a poster and a leaflet on greenhouse pests for the public (visitors of the greenhouses of the Botanical garden at Masaryk University).
