Comparison of the non-violent campaign of the Serbian Otpor Movement and the Egyptian April 6 Movement

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce představuje koncept nenásilného odporu jako alternativní způsob řešení konfliktů vůči násilí. V teoretické části práce jsou nastíněna jeho základní východiska, konkrétní metody a mechanismy a časté mylné představy, které se k jeho výzkumu váží. Druhá část potom představuje konkrétní komparativní případovou studií nenásilných kampaní dvou hnutí, a to srbského hnutí Otpor, které napomohlo pádu režimu Slobodana Miloševiće v říjnu 2000, a egyptského Hnutí 6. dubna, jež bylo jednou ze skupin, které zapříčinily rezignaci prezidenta Hosniho Mubaraka po protestech v lednu a únoru 2011. V závěrečné kapitole jsou nenásilné kampaně obou hnutí porovnány, a to jak z pohledu jejich připravenosti, tak i zvolených nenásilných metod.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to introduce the concept of non-violent struggle as an alternative to violence in conflict resolution. In the theoretical part, there is an outline of its basic principles, methods and mechanisms and also the most common misconceptions connected to the research of this concept. The second part of the thesis is a concrete comparative case study of two non-violent campaigns, one being the Serbian Otpor movement which helped to bring down the regime of Slobodan Milosevic in October 2000 and the second one being the Egyptian April 6 Movement, which was one of the protest groups leading to a resignation of the president Hosni Mubarak after the protests in January and February 2011. In the final chapter of the thesis, there is a comparison of both movements in terms of their preparedness and also their concrete choice of non-violent methods.
