Apuleius Defense Against Accusation of Witchcraft

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje analýze významného antického literárního pramene, díla filozofa Lucia Apuleia, kterým je Apologie aneb vlastní obhajoba proti nařčení z čarodějnictví. Jedná se o „obranný“ spis, který pojednává o údajném soudním procesu v Sabratě, kdy byl Apuleius obviněn svými příbuznými z praktikování magie a tomuto nařčení se před tribunálem bránil vlastní obranou řečí. Práce se zaměřuje na otázky, jak Apuleius v Obraně chápe magii a jakou roli hraje téma magie v tomto konkrétním soudním sporu a sociálním konfliktu (snaha příbuzných o eliminaci Apuleia z majetkových důvodů). V teoretické části se zaměřuje se na problematiku studia antické magie a ukotvení magie v římském právním systému, sociální a náboženský kontext doby, v níž autor žil a také se vyjadřuje se k otázce historicity samotného pramene. Práce vychází z Apuleiova chápání magie a čarodějnictví a zaměřuje se na jeho polemiku s jednotlivými obviněními – není proto teoretickým příspěvkem, ale naopak rekonstrukcí konkrétní představy a užití argumentace pomocí magie (čarodějnictví) v konkrétní společnosti a dobovém rámci. Práce se snaží objasnit, jak bylo v rámci tohoto sporu o majetek účelově využito obvinění z čarodějnictví a také přispět k porozumění ambivalentnosti vztahu magie a náboženství.

Abstract:

This thesis aplies analysis of important antic literature source of philosoph Lucius Apuleius, which is called Apology or Defense Against Accusation of Witchcraft. It is a "defensive" source which deals with the alleged lawsuit in Sabrata where Apuleius was accused of practicing magic. This accusation was done by his relatives and then he defended himself before the tribunal by his own defense speech. The study is focused on question of how Apuleius in the Defense understands the magic and which role played the themes of magic in this particular litigation and social conflict (related to the effort to eliminate Apuleius because of his property). The theoretical part focuses on the study of ancient magic and tries to ground the magic in the Roman legal system, social and religious context of the time in which the author lived and also addressed the historicity of the source itself. The work is based on Apuleius understanding of magic and witchcraft and focuses on the polemic with individual allegations. Therefore it isn't a theoretical contribution, but the reconstruction of specific ideas and arguments through the use of magic (witchcraft) in a particular society and the contemporary context. The thesis attempts to explain how it was used accusations of witchcraft in the context of the dispute over the property and also contribute to the understanding of the relationship ambivalence of magic and religion.
