Temporal pattern analysis of suspended solids in rivers: linkages to discharge, precipitation distribution and catchment characteristics

Abstract:

Plaveniny ve vodních tocích jsou důležitou matricí podílející se na transportu prvků a polutantů, proto jsou často studovány z kvalitativního hlediska. Důležitý je ovšem i kvantitativní aspekt plavenin, který odráží erozně-sedimentační procesy v povodí. Cílem diplomové práce bylo vyhodnotit časovou dynamiku plavenin na vybraných stanicích vodních toků Svitava a Bečva a analyzovat jejich vztah k potenciálně řídícím faktorům. K tomuto účelu byla analyzována denní data průtoku vody a koncentrace plavenin v období 2009 až 2019 na stanicích Bílovice nad Svitavou a Dluhonice. Diplomová práce uvádí stav poznání na poli studované problematiky a stručně charakterizuje studovaná povodí. V jedenáctileté časové řadě průměrného denního průtoku vody a průměrné denní koncentrace plavenin získaných z Českého hydrometeorologického ústavu (ČHMÚ) byly analyzovány vztahy koncentrace plavenin k průtoku vody a dalším potenciálně řídícím faktorům. Obě lokality vykazují sezónní odlišnosti koncentrace plavenin a také vzájemnou závislost řídících faktorů. Nejvíce epizod zvýšené koncentrace plavenin bylo zaznamenáno v letním a jarním období v souvislosti s letní bouřkovou činností a táním sněhu. K analýze epizod zvýšené koncentrace plavenin byly využity klasifikační a ordinační metody aplikované na 43 charakteristik koncentrace plavenin, průtoku vody a úhrnu srážek. Většina epizod zvýšené koncentrace plavenin na obou stanicích se vyznačuje krátkým trváním s maximální koncentrací plavenin nepřekračující 100 mg.l-1 v případě Bílovic nad Svitavou, 200 mg.l-1 v Dluhonicích. Ve studovaných letech bylo identifikováno 7 až 44 epizodních dní na stanici Bílovice nad Svitavou a 10 až 86 dní na stanici Dluhonice, během kterých došlo k odtoku plavenin převážně přesahující 75 % roční hodnoty. Práce přináší zjištění, že maximální koncentrace plavenin nebyly zaznamenány společně s maximálními průtoky vody, absolutní hodnotu průtoku vody nelze považovat za nejdůležitější řídící faktor epizod zvýšené koncentrace plavenin. Podstatnými faktory ovlivňujícími stanovené parametry koncentrace plavenin epizody se ukázala variabilita průtoku vody, délka trvání epizody a vliv podmínek v období předcházející epizodě. Na základě exponenciálních vztahů a pomocí regresních stromů zjištěné hierarchie vysvětlujících proměnných a jejich prahových hodnot lze zhodnotit a ve studovaných lokalitách predikovat maximální koncentraci plavenin epizody. K dalšímu rozvoji modelování dynamiky plavenin by bylo možné přispět časově podrobnějším pozorováním změn průtoku vody a koncentrace plavenin, což je ovšem finančně i provozně náročné, a rozšíření studie o více lokalit. Vzorkovací strategie koncentrace plavenin v České republice je pro jejich studium vhodná, avšak při rozboru epizod je třeba uvažovat velké množství faktorů, které koncentraci plavenin ovlivňují. Počet epizodních dní spolu s dalšími charakteristikami by bylo vhodné zařadit do českých hydrologických ročenek.

Abstract:

Suspended sediments in rivers are an important matrix involved in the transport of elements and pollutants, so they are often studied from a qualitative point of view. However, what is also important is the quantification aspect of such suspended sediments, which reflects erosion-sedimentation processes in the basin. The aim of this diploma thesis was to evaluate the temporal dynamics of suspended sediments at study sites of the Svitava and Bečva rivers and to analyze their relationship to potentially controlling factors. For this purpose, the daily data of water discharge and suspended sediment concentration in the period 2009 to 2019 at station Bílovice nad Svitavou and Dluhonice were analyzed. The diploma thesis presents the state of knowledge in the field of the studied issues and briefly characterizes the studied river basin. At eleven-year’s time series, the average daily water discharge and the average daily concentration of suspended sediments obtained from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) was analyzed. This analysis focused on the relationships of the concentration of suspended sediments to water discharge and other potentially controlling factors. Both localities show seasonal differences of the suspended sediment concentration and the correlation of control factors. The most episodes of elevated level of suspended sediments were found in the summer and spring, due to summer storm activity and melting snow. Classification and ordination methods applied to 43 variables of suspended sediment concentration, water discharge and total precipitation were used to analyze episodes of elevated level of suspended sediments. For most episodes of elevated level of suspended sediments concentration at both stations a short duration with a maximum concentration of suspended sediments not exceeding 100 mg.l-1 is typical in the case of Bílovice nad Svitavou, 200 mg.l-1 in Dluhonice. In most of the studied years, 7 to 44 episodic days a year were identified at the Bílovice nad Svitavou station and 10 to 86 days for year at the Dluhonice station, during which more than 75% of the annual amount of suspended sediment yield was taken away. The thesis contributes to the finding that the maximum concentration of suspended sediments does not occur together with the maximum water discharge, so the absolute value of water maximum discharge cannot be taken as the critical controlling factor of the episodes of elevated level of suspended sediments concentration. Critical factors controlling concentration of suspended sediments appeared to be the variability of the discharge, the duration of the episode and the effect of antecedent conditions. On the basis of exponential relations and regression trees, which identified a hierarchy of explanatory variables and their threshold values it is possible to evaluate and predict the maximum concentration of the suspended solids in the studied localities. It would be possible to contribute to further development of modelling of suspended sediments dynamics by higher frequency of observation of water discharge and suspended sediments concentration, which is financially and operationally demanding, it would be also convenient to extend the study to more localities. The sampling strategy of the concentration of suspended sediments in the Czech Republic is useful, but in the analysis of the episodes it is necessary to consider a large number of factors that affect the suspended sediment concentration. The number of episodic days together with other characteristics should be included in the Czech hydrological yearbooks.
