Urban tourism - adaptation strategies

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of overtourism and its possible solutions in the form of adaptation strategies. The aim of the thesis is to examine the demonstrations of overtourism and to identify the adaptation strategies which can contribute to decrease of its impact on the life of the destination. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces the main backgrounds of tourist growth and concepts which are related to the growth of the tourism. In addition, the adaptation strategies are described. The empirical part is divided into an overview of statistical data demonstrating the presence of tourist overburdening and the case studies in urban destinations - namely Bruges, Český Krumlov and Dubrovnik. In these destinations the main demonstrations of overtourism are analyzed using quantitative and qualitative methods. Furthermore, the adaptation strategies used by active participants in the field of tourism (destination marketing organisations, local authorities, tourist visitors, residents) are defined. In the conclusion adaptation strategies are suggested in the best possible way to correspond with the current state of tourism in urban destinations and to reduce the power of tourist congestion.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá problematikou nadmerného cestovného ruchu (overtourism) a jeho možných riešení v podobe adaptačných stratégií. Cieľom práce je preskúmať prejavy overtourism a identifikovať adaptačné stratégie, ktoré môžu prispieť k poklesu jeho vplyvu na život destinácie. V teoretickej časti sú predstavené hlavné východiská turistického rastu a koncepty, s ktorými je rast cestovného ruchu úzko spätý a tiež sú popísané adaptačné stratégie. Empirická časť je rozdelená na prehľad štatistických dát dokladajúcich prítomnosť turistického preťaženia a prípadové štúdie v mestských destináciách Bruggy, Český Krumlov a Dubrovník. V nich sú pomocou kvantitatívnych a kvalitatívnych metód zisťované hlavné prejavy overtourism a definované adaptačné stratégie uplatňované aktérmi pôsobiacimi v cestovnom ruchu (organizácie destinačného marketingu, vedenie mesta, turistickí návštevníci, miestni obyvatelia). V závere sú navrhnuté adaptačné stratégie tak, aby čo najvhodnejšie odpovedali súčasnému stavu turizmu v mestských destináciách a dokázali znížiť silu turistického preťaženia.
