Expulsed from the Garden of Eden to Paradise: The Role of Religion in the Lives of Romanian Migrant in the Czech society

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce využívající kvalitativní metody sociologického výzkumu prozkoumá náboženskou zkušenost Rumunů – ateistů, praktikujících i nepraktikujících pravoslavných a nepravoslavných věřících. Pomocí perspektivy diaspory se na základě narativních a polostrukturovaných rozhovorů zaměří na dvě strategie mobilizace víry v postmigrační realitě, které odráží každodenní zkušenosti migrantů a propojují koncepty migrace, náboženství a transnacionalismu. Jedná se 1) o náboženství jako prostředek tvorby a udržování transnacionálních vztahů a sítí, které zahrnuje různorodé náboženské praktiky rumunského pravoslaví; a 2) o osvobození se od náboženství a (nejenom náboženských) struktur rumunské společnosti, ke kterému dochází skrze a díky migraci, a sekularizaci migrantů a vědomé nepřináležení k transnacionální síti. Cílem této práce je tedy zmapovat náboženskou orientaci (bývalých) pravoslavných rumunských migrantů v jednom konkrétním českém městě, zjistit, jaký význam má náboženství v jejich postmigrační realitě a jakou roli hraje náboženství (pravoslaví) v transnacionalismu. Vše bude analyzováno v kontextu české společnosti, která je, oproti Rumunsku, charakterizována relativně nízkou úrovní institucionální víry.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis using qualitative methods of sociological research explores the religious experience of Romanian atheists, practising and nonpractising orthodox and nonorthodox believers. Using a perspective of diaspora and drawing on narrative and semi-structured interviews this paper investigates two opposing forms of religious mobilization in post-migration everyday life which indicate varying connections between religion and migration. The first form emphasizes religion as a means of forming and maintaining transnational ties and networks, which includes various forms of practising Romanian orthodoxy; the second form stresses deliberation from religion and the (not only religious) structures of Romanian society through and because of migration. The latter also entails the secularization of migrants and their emphasis on not belonging to transnational social field. The aim of this paper is to explore religious orientation of Romanian migrants in one big Czech city; to detect the roles of religion (Orthodoxy) in post-migration and in transnationalism. The findings are carefully interpreted within the context of the Czech society, which is, compared to Romanian society, characterized by a relatively low level of institutional faith.
