Specific Needs of a Roman Soldier in the Context of Ancient Religion

Abstract:

Dedikační nápisy vytvořené římskými vojáky, na které se tento projekt zaměřuje, jsou skvělým a důležitým pomocníkem při studiu zbožnosti římských vojáků, potažmo celého římského náboženství, neboť na žité každodenní rovině demonstrují, jak byl římský kulturní a náboženský systém pružný. Tato práce se soustřeďuje na zbožnost římských vojáků a na její specifika v římské říši ve 2. a 3. století n. l. Projekt si klade jako hlavní otázku, jak způsob života a specifické potřeby římských vojáků mohly ovlivňovat jejich zbožnost. Součástí této práce je analýza nejčastějších kultů a božstev uctívaných vojáky a toho, jaké aspekty měly kulty společné, čím pro vojáky mohly být přitažlivé a jaké specifické potřeby vojáků mohly plnit. Konkrétní případovou studií pro analýzy v této práci bude proto oblast provincie Británie během římské invaze ve 2. a 3. století. Práce stojí na důkladném prostudování seznamů archeologických nálezů a elektronických katalogů dokumentujících římské dedikační nápisy vytvořené římskými vojáky na britském území.

Abstract:

The dedicatory inscriptions created by Roman soldiers, which are the focus of this pro-ject, are an excellent and important tool for studying the piety of Roman soldiers and, by extension, Roman religion as a whole, as they demonstrate on a lived everyday level how flexible the Roman cultural and religious system was. This thesis focuses on the piety of Roman soldiers and its specificities in the Roman Empire in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The project asks the central question of how the way of life and the specific needs of Roman soldiers may have influenced their religious preference. This work includes an analysis of the most common cults and deities worshipped by soldiers and what aspects the cults had in common, what might have made them attractive to soldiers, and what specific needs they might have fulfilled. The specific case study for the analyses in this thesis will therefore be the area of the province of Britannia during the Roman invasion in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The thesis is based on a thorough study of lists of archaeo-logical finds and electronic catalogues documenting Roman dedicatory inscriptions pro-duced by Roman soldiers on British territory.
