Authoritarianism and restricted democracy: Perceived threat, anxiety and anger

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zaměřuje na souvislosti mezi autoritářstvím, vnímanou hrozbou, emocemi a restriktivními postoji. Autoritářství vychází z konceptu pravicového autoritářství (RWA), které je v současné době považováno za nejvíce prozkoumanou dimenzi autoritářství. Emoce jsou studovány z pohledu Teorie afektivní inteligence (AIT), která se zaměřuje především na roli úzkosti, hněvu a entusiasmu. Tato disertační práce se skládá z jedné přehledové studie a dvou empirických studií. Obě empirické studie byly provedeny na vzorcích dospělých Čechů a data byla analyzována využitím strukturního modelování. Studie I podává podrobný popis AIT a zároveň podává přehled studií testujících tuto teorii. Podle této teorie jsou úzkost a hněv vyvolány vnímáním hrozby, zatímco entusiasmus je vyvolán v neohrožující situaci. Mělo by také záležet na konkrétní situaci, zda bude vyvolána úzkost nebo hněv. Na základě existující literatury byl vytvořen předpoklad, že úzkost by měla oslabit vliv RWA na restriktivní postoje, zatímco hněv by měl tento vliv posílit. Studie II byla navržena tak, aby dále testovala vztah mezi RWA a vnímanou hrozbou a aby ověřila, jak tento vztah ovlivňuje podporu restrikcí. Dle výsledků je vztah mezi těmito proměnnými částečně mediovaný, což znamená, že RWA je spojeno se silnějším vnímáním hrozby, což dále vede k silnější podpoře restrikcí. Studie III se zaměřuje na roli úzkosti, hněvu a entusiasmu a na to, jak tyto emoce ovlivňují RWA a jeho vliv na restriktivní postoje. Zde byly provedeny dva online experimenty a jedno průřezové dotazníkové šetření. Cílem těchto tří studií bylo ověřit, jak emoce moderují vliv RWA na restriktivní postoje. Výsledky Studie III neposkytují podporu pro předpokládanou roli emocí podle AIT. Celkově tato disertační práce neposkytuje podporu pro AIT, ale má určité implikace pro AIT i teorii RWA. Na základě existující literatury, AIT a výsledků Studie II lze vyvodit závěr, že vnímaná hrozba v kontextu RWA není spojeno s úzkostí, ale s hněvem, což je také v souladu s pozitivními efekty RWA i vnímané hrozby na restriktivní postoje. Implikace pro AIT se zaměřují především na možnou roli intervenujících proměnných, které mohou ovlivnit konkrétní vliv emocí.

Abstract:

The main focus of this dissertation is the association between authori-tarianism, perceived threat, emotions, and restrictive attitudes. Author-itarianism is based on right-wing authoritarianism (RWA), which is currently considered the most studied dimension of authoritarianism. Emotions are studied from the viewpoint of Affective intelligence theo-ry (AIT), which focuses mainly on the role of anxiety, anger, and en-thusiasm. This dissertation consists of one review study and two em-pirical studies. Both empirical studies were conducted on samples of Czech adults and data were analysed using structural equation model-ling. Study I provides a detailed description of AIT and it also provides a review of studies testing this theory. According to this theory, anxiety and anger are elicited by perception of threat, whereas enthusiasm is elicited in non-threatening situation. It should depend on the concrete situation whether anxiety or anger will be elicited. Based on the exist-ing literature, it was assumed that anxiety should weaken the effect of RWA on restrictive attitudes, whereas anger should strengthen this association. Study II was designed to further test the association be-tween RWA and perceived threat and to test how this association af-fects the support of restrictions. Results support a partial mediational relationship between these variables, which means that the RWA is associated with a stronger perceived threat, which further leads to a stronger support for restrictions. Study III focuses on the role of anxi-ety, anger, and enthusiasm, and how these emotions affect RWA and its effect on restrictive attitudes. Here, two online experiments and one cross-sectional survey were conducted. The purpose of these three studies was to test how emotions moderate the effect of RWA on re-strictive attitudes. Results of Study III do not provide support for the assumed role of emotions based on AIT. Overall, this dissertation does not provide support for the AIT claims, but provides some implications for both AIT and RWA theory. Based on existing literature, AIT, and the results of Study II, we can conclude that perception of threat in the context of RWA is not associated with anxiety, but with anger, which is also consistent with the positive effects of both RWA and perceived threat on restrictive attitudes. Implications for AIT focus mainly on the possible role of intervening variables that can affect the specific mani-festation of emotions.
