Students' motivation in English classes at a lower secondary school

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá motivací žáků devátého ročníku základní školy v hodinách anglického jazyka. Hlavním cílem bylo zdůraznit důležitost učebních materiálů, které mohou výrazně přispět a ovlivnit motivaci žáků. Kromě toho se tato práce zaměřuje taky na to, co žáky ke studiu anglického jazyka motivuje obecně, jakou úlohu v motivaci sehrává učitel, prostředí, ve kterém výuka probíhá a v neposlední řadě již zmiňované učební materiály. Všechny faktory mohou poměrně výrazně ovlivnit motivaci žáků, která obzvláště na druhém stupni základní školy může být problematická. Ke zjištění požadovaných výsledků byl proveden akční výzkum, který pomohl odhalit nejproblematičtější oblast tj. učebnice, které pro studenty představovaly spíše demotivující element pro studium anglického jazyka.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is concerned with motivation of a group of 9th grade students in English lessons at a lower secondary school. The main objective was to emphasize the importance of teaching materials that might represent the essential role in students' motivation. In addition, this work also focused on what motivates students to learn English in general, the role of a teacher as a possible motivator and the environment that may influence students' motivation too, and the last but not least, the above-mentioned learning materials. All of the factors may significantly affect students' motivation, which especially at the lower secondary level might be problematic. In order to determine the expected results the action research was conducted, which helped to uncover the most problematic area, which were the textbooks that represented a discouraging element for students in the study of English.
