Multicultural Literature for Children from Bilingual Environment

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá téma multikulturní literatury pro děti pocházející z bilingvního a bikulturního prostředí. Jejím záměrem je upozornit na myšlenky multikulturalismu, jednoho z nejaktuálnějších témat společnosti 21. století. Dále studie předkládá informace týkající se bilingvismu a bilingvních čtenářů jako jednoho z produktů tohoto sociálního fenoménu. Práce je založena na komparativní studii literárních děl bilingvních a bikulturních skupin nacházejících se v České republice a Spojených Státech, proto se analýza studie zabývá vybranými zástupci knih pro děti z Romských a Mexicko-Amerických menšin. Závěry studie odhalují možnosti a zároveň rezervy autorů, jejich zachycení rozmanitosti těchto velmi specifických kultur v literatuře. Poselstvím práce je na základě předložených výsledků vzbudit větší zájem v oblasti multikulturní literatury a tímto podpořit myšlenky multikulturalismu, který je v podstatě jedním z hlavních rysů postmoderní společnosti, jenž se významně odráží také v prostředí České republiky.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis explores the topic of multicultural literature for children coming from bilingual and bicultural environment. It intends to draw the attention to ideas of multiculturalism, one of the most current topics of the 21st century. Then it puts forward information concerning bilingualism and bilingual readers as one of its products. The thesis is based on a comparative study of literary works of bilingual and bicultural groups in the Czech Republic and United States. Hence, the analysis studies books for children, the representatives of which come from Romani and Mexican American minorities. Its conclusions uncover the possibilities and limitations of chosen authors in depicting the diversity of these very specific cultures in literature. Based on its conclusions, the message of the study is to raise further interest in the area of multicultural literature and support the ideas of multiculturalism, which is basically one of the main features of the postmodern society, significantly reflected also in the environment of the Czech society.
