Of Animals and Men in contemporary Swedish literature

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl analyzovat roli zvířat, jejich postavení a vyobrazení a zejména pak vztahy mezi zvířaty a lidmi v současné švédské literatuře. Pracuje s kontrastem člověk x zvíře i s podobností společnosti lidské a zvířecí, zkoumá vzájemný dialog těchto společenství a okrajově se dotýká také témat jako je zvířecí přirozenost, metamorfóza lidské bytosti ve zvíře či ekologie. Teoretická část nahlíží do historie i současnosti trendů, jimiž lze ke zvířatům v literatuře přistupovat (např. animal studies, antropocentrismus, lidský excepcionalismus či human-animal relations). Praktická část posléze tyto teorie aplikuje na díla vybraných švédských autorů – jedná se o prózy Fårdagboken (A. Lindén, 2017); Absint: Historien om en blåmes (N. Rådström, 2003) a Severský bestiář (A. Lundgrenová, použit český překlad z roku 2019). Cílem práce je tak představit základní pojmy z různých teoretických přístupů, které umožňují charakterizovat zvířata jakožto postavy na malém vzorku současné švédské literatury a také nastínit další možnosti využití těchto teorií nejen na skandinávskou literaturu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to analyze the role of animals, their position and portrayal, and especially the relationship between animals and humans in contemporary Swedish literature. It uses the contrast of man x animal as well as the similarities of human and animal societies, examines the mutual dialogue of these societies and marginally touches on topics such as animal nature, metamorphoses of human beings into animals or ecology. The theoretical part looks at the historical and contemporary trends used to approach animals in literature (e.g. animal studies, anthropocentrism, human exceptionalism and human-animal relations). The practical part then applies these theories to the works of selected Swedish authors - namely to fiction prose books Fårdagboken (A. Lindén, 2017); Absinthe: Historien om en blåmes (N. Rådström, 2003); and Nordic Fauna (A. Lundgren, Czech translation from 2019 is used). The aim of this thesis is to introduce the basic concepts of various theoretical approaches, which allow to characterize animals as characters using a small sample of contemporary Swedish literature, and also to outline future possibilities of using these theories in Scandinavian literature.
