London and Paris in Charles Dickens’ ‘A Tale of Two Cities’

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá románem A Tale of Two Cities od Charlese Dickense, přičemž se soustředí na Londýn a Paříž na konci 18. století, kdy se příběh odehrává, a na začátek 19. století, kdy byl román publikovaný. První část nabízí uvedení do historického kontextu románu a zkoumá jaký dopad měly společenské problémy, prohlubující se chudoba a industrializace na anglickou a francouzskou společnost. V druhé části je zkoumáno jakým způsobem ovlivnily společenské faktory chování dvou hlavních postav a jak Dickens prostřednictvím jejich vyobrazení komentuje převládající problémy anglické a francouzské společnosti 18. a 19. století.

Abstract:

This thesis examines Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, focusing on London and Paris at the end of the 18th century when the story is set, and beginning of the 19th century when the novel was published. The first part provides historical context for the novel and examines how political and social issues, growing poverty, and industrialization impacted English and French society. The second part explores how societal factors influenced the behavior of two main characters and how Dickens comments on prevalent issues of English and French society of 18th and 19th centuries through their portrayal.
