Detecting botnet networks using NetFlow data

Abstract:

My thesis deals with detecting botnet network using NetFlow data. Chapters of the thesis discuss history of botnets, current situation, principles, communication sings and characteristics. The thesis based on various publications gives analysis of possible detection methods with putting emphasis on using NetFlow data. Selected methods are implemented as plugins of NfSen tool which is graphic interface for nfdump tool. The thesis makes conclusions about possible infiltrations in network of Faculty of education MU based on gained experimental data.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá analýzou možnosti detekcie botnet sietí pomocou NetFlow dát. V jednotlivých kapitolách podáva popis vývoja botnet sietí, ich súčasný stav, princípy, komunikačné rysy a charakteristiky. Na základe viacerých rozmanitých publikácií podáva analýzu možných spôsobov detekcie botnet sietí s ohľadom na využitie NetFlow dát. Jednotlivé vybrané metódy sú implementované ako zásuvné moduly pre NfSen nástroj, ktorý tvorí grafickú nadstavbu nástroja nfdump. Na základe získaných experimentálnych dát z implementovaných modulov formuluje závery o možných botnet infiltráciách v sieti Pedagogickej fakulty MU.
