Archaeological evidence of Old Germanic religion(s) in Central Europe

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá možnými archeologickými doklady náboženských tradic starých Germánů na území střední Evropy, především pak České Republiky. Úvodní část se zabývá obecně teoreticko-metodologickými problémy studia náboženství vůbec a obzvláště pak studia archaických náboženských tradic z archeologického materiálu. Za tímto účelem jsou zde stručně shrnuty různé přístupy k vlastní konceptualizaci pojmu náboženství a k jeho studiu v rámci archeologie i religionistiky. Zohledněny jsou také problémy spojené s aplikací religionistických teorií a přístupů na archeologický materiál a při archeologických interpretacích. Pro účely této práce je pak stanoveno několik výchozích teoretických tezí a vlastní definice „náboženství“, které vychází převážně z přístupů kognitivní religionistiky. Následující část se zabývá obecnou charakteristikou náboženských tradic starých Germánů s ohledem na soudobé antické i pozdější středověké prameny. Náboženství starých Germánů zde není pojímáno jako ucelený jednotný systém, ale spíše jako soubor různorodých až vzájemně neslučitelných tradic. Podobně ani samotní Germáni patrně nikdy netvořili jednotné „etnikum“, ale šlo spíše o seskupení různých kmenů s vlastními tradicemi a zvyky. I tyto tradice ale patrně měly určité společné rysy, které jsou charakterizovány dále a rozděleny do několika okruhů: mytologie a světonázor, božstva a nadlidské bytosti, kultovní a náboženské jednání a pohřební ritus. Hlavní část práce pak tvoří přehled možných archeologických dokladů kultovního (či nábožensky motivovaného) jednání na našem území (s případnými paralelami v zahraničí), rozdělených podle svého nálezového kontextu. Nejprve jsou zmíněny „přírodní“ či izolované lokality jako skalní město Čertova Ruka nebo údajná svatyně v Libenicích. Dále jsou sledována potenciální kultovní místa na sídlištích, jako velké halové stavby nebo otopná zařízení v domech, i zvláštní jevy, jako pohřby lidí i zvířat v sídlištních objektech. Na pohřebištích pak jsou s možnými kultovními praktikami spojovány různé povrchové konstrukce, ohrazení a žároviště. Zmíněny jsou také možné motivace pro doprovodné pohřby koní a psů. Závěrem je rozebráno možné kultovní využití mobiliáře, zejména luxusního zboží v podobě římsko-provinciálních importů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with possible archaeological evidence of religious traditions of the Germanic tribes in Central Europe, especially the Czech Republic. Introductory part deals with theoretical and methodological problems of the study of religions in general, and especially the study of archaic religious traditions from archaeological material. For this purpose, the various approaches to the conceptualization of the concept of religion itself and to it's research within archeology and the scientific studies of religions are briefly summarized. The problems associated with the application of theories and approaches from the scientific studies of religions to archaeological material and archaeological interpretations are also taken into account. For the purpose of this work, some initial theoretical propositions and a definition of "religion", mostly influenced by the cognitive approaches to the study of religion, are then stated. The following section deals with the general characteristics of the religious traditions of the Germanic tribes with regard to contemporary ancient and later medieval sources. Old Germanic religion is not conceived here as a single integrated system, but rather as a set of diverse, even mutually incompatible traditions. Similarly, the Germanic peoples themselves probably never formed a single "ethnic group", but rather a grouping of different tribes with their own traditions and customs. These traditions however had some common features, which are further characterized and divided into several areas: mythology and worldview, deities and superhuman beings, cultic and religious behaviour and funeral rites. The main part of this thesis consists of an overview of possible archaeological evidence of cultic (or religiously motivated) activities in Czech Republic (with possible parallels abroad), divided by the context of the finds. First mentioned are the "natural" or isolated locations, such as the rock formations at Čertova Ruka or the alleged shrine in Libenice. Further on, potential cultic places on settlements are observed, such as large hall buildings, fireplaces in houses, or special phenomena, such as funerals of people and animals on settlements. On burial grounds certain surface structures, enclosures and fireplace features may be associated with cultic practices. Possible motivations for horse and dog burials are also mentioned. Finally, the possible cultic uses of artefacts, especially luxury goods, such as imports from the Roman provinces, are discussed.
