Financing of postgraduate study in the Czech Republic and in the USA

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na zhodnocení rozdílů ve financování doktorského studia mezi univerzitami v České republice a ve Spojených státech amerických. Jelikož jsou mezi těmito zeměmi výrazné odlišnosti ve školském systému, jsou i na studenty kladeny odlišné požadavky týkající se nejen přijímacího řízení, průchodu studiem a jeho zakončení, ale rovněž finanční náročnosti pro samotné studenty i univerzity. Cílem práce bylo pomocí dotazníkového šetření identifikovat rozdíly ve finanční situaci doktorandů a na základě takto zjištěných odlišností byly navrženy možnosti zlepšení financování doktorského studia v ČR. Přestože je terciární studium v ČR na rozdíl od USA poskytováno bezplatně, bylo zjištěno, že studenti v USA jsou s poměrem svých příjmů a výdajů celkově více spokojeni a dostává se jim lepší finanční podpory ze strany univerzity. Díky tomu se mohou soustředit primárně na studium. Studenti v USA také častěji očekávali další zlepšení finančního ohodnocení v zaměstnání v návaznosti na dosažení titulu Ph.D., což může být jedním z faktorů zvyšujícím atraktivitu doktorského studia v USA pro budoucí uchazeče.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the evaluation of differences between the financing of postgraduate study in the Czech Republic and the United States of America. Considering the fact that these two countries have significant differences in their education systems, different requirements are imposed in terms of admission procedure, during the study and graduation, but also when it comes to the expenses for both students and universities. The main aim of this thesis was to use questionnaire survey to identify differences in the financial situation of postgraduate students. Based on the collected answers, several recommendations focused on the improvement of the financing of doctoral studies were proposed. Although tertiary education in the Czech Republic, unlike in the USA, is provided free of charge, it was found out that students in the USA are generally more satisfied with the ratio of their income and life expenses and they receive better financial support from the universities. As a result, they can better focus on their study. Students in the USA were also more likely to expect a further salary improvement after finishing their doctoral studies. This may be one of the factors increasing the attractiveness of doctoral studies in the USA for future applicants.
