Beginning Geography Teachers: Expectations and Reality

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá rozdíly mezi prvotními představami začínajících učitelů geografie o učitelském povolání a zakoušenou realitou po nástupu do profese. V teoretické části je popsána pregraduální příprava učitelů, včetně sporu mezi teorií a praxí geografického vzdělávání, a také problematika začínajících učitelů a jejich podpory ve formě provázejícího učitele na učitelské praxi při studiu a ve formě uvádějícího učitele při začátcích v profesi. Praktická část je tvořena kvalitativním výzkumem zkušeností čtyř začínajících učitelů s přechodem do praxe. Mezi témata, vynořená z interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy, u kterých respondenti shledávají největší rozdíly mezi představami a realitou, patří nepřipravenost na specifické situace ve škole, souboj s nedostatkem času či neatraktivita geografie jako vyučovacího předmětu.

Abstract:

The MA thesis explores the differences between the initial perceptions of beginning geography teachers about the teaching profession and the reality experienced after entering the profession. The theoretical part describes undergraduate teacher preparation, including the conflict between theory and practice in geography education, and the issues of beginning teachers and their support in the form of mentors on teaching practice during their studies and when they enter the profession. The practical part consists of qualitative research into the experiences of four beginning teachers in their transition to practice. The themes that emerged from the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, where respondents find the most significant gaps between perceptions and reality include unpreparedness for specific situations in school, struggles with lack of time, and the unattractiveness of geography as a school subject.
