A comprehensive conservation and restoration intervention on a historical phonograph

Abstract:

Tato práce je věnovaná průzkumu a konzervátorsko-restaurátorskému zásahu na historickém fonografu ze sbírek Slezské-ho zemského muzea v Opavě. Tento fonograf byl vyráběn společností Columbia v letech 1905 až 1908 pod označením Graphophone, model BC. V části historického průzkumu se práce obecně věnuje problematice fonografů jako přístrojů a jejich předchůdcům, dále pak stručné historii společnosti Columbia a popisu modelu BC a jeho současníkům. V části technologické se práce věnuje popisu předmětu samotného a jeho materiálů, dále metodám použitých analýz a zhodnocení jejich výsledků. Celou práci završuje kapitola konzervace a restaurování samotného fonografu, včetně fotodokumentace.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on research, conservation, and restoration of a historical phonograph from the collections of Silesian Museum in Opava. This phonograph was produced since 1905 till 1908 by the Columbia Phonograph Company under the trademark Columbia Graphophone, type BC. The core of the historical research part consists of general phonograph problematics and evolution, followed by a brief history of Columbia Company and a description of type BC and its contemporaries. The technological part describes the object itself, its materials, and it is followed by the methods of analyses and the interpretation of their results. The thesis ends with a chapter of conservation and restoration, including photodocumentation.
