Effect of Dialectical behavioural therapy on self harm and seeking out medical help in patients with Borderline Personality Disorder

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce má za cíl zanalyzovat první výsledky z longitudinálního výzkumu Psychiatrické kliniky FN Brno. Práce se zaměřením na hraniční poruchu osobnosti (HPO) navazuje na předchozí bakalářkou práci autorky. Teoretická část se věnuje hraniční poruše osobnosti a možnostech terapie, zejména se soustředíme na dialektickou behaviorální terapii (DBT). Výzkumná část se zabývá efektivitou DBT jako terapie zaměřené na léčbu pacientů s HPO na vzorku jedenácti pacientů, zejména vlivem DBT na sebepoškozující chování a vyhledávání lékařské péče. Výsledky ukazují statisticky významný pokles v oblasti symptomatiky HPO, škodlivého chování, včetně sebepoškozování, a emoční dysregulace u pacientů s HPO po absolvování DBT, přičemž pokles je významný i půl roku po ukončení terapie. Výsledky první analýzy tak vypadají slibně, bude ovšem potřeba provést rozsáhlejší analýzu většího vzorku, až budou data k dispozici, k ověření a rozšíření nynějších poznatků.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to analyse first sets of data obtained from a longitudinal research project lead by the Psychiatric clinic (PC) in Faculty Hospital Brno which started in 2020. The main focus on borderline personality disorder (BPD) is following up on the author’s previous work (bachelor’s thesis). The theoretical part of this thesis includes information about BPD and its therapy options, mainly dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) as that is the therapy program currently held at the PC. The second, research, part focuses on the effectivity of the DBT program, specifically in the areas of self-harm and seeking medical help. The DBT group data were acquired from eleven borderline patients who agreed to be a part of the research and managed to undertake the whole DBT program successfully. The results showed DBT to be statistically significant in reducing BPD symptoms, harmful behaviour (including self-harm) and emotion dysregulation in borderline patients who graduated the DBT program. The de-crease in the aforementioned areas showed to be statistically significant even half a year after finishing DBT. Therefore, analysis of the first data available showed promising results, but there will be need for further analyses of a bigger data sample, when it’s available, to confirm these results and expand on them.
