Spatiotemporal variability of hydrometeorological extremes in the Czech Republic based on newspaper articles, 1941–1960

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá studiem hydrometeorologických extrémů a jejich obětí v období 1941–1960 v České republice. Data byla získána na základě článků z Lidových novin a Rudého práva pokrývajících celé sledované období. Celkem bylo v období 1941–1960 zaznamenáno 98 událostí hydrometeorologických extrémů s maximem v roce 1943 (16,5 %) a průměrem pět událostí za rok. Události byly zařazeny do pěti kategorií – povodeň, konvektivní bouře, zimní fenomény, sucho a silný mráz. V rámci kategorií bylo dále rozlišeno celkem 16 typů hydrometeorologických extrémů. Nejvíce událostí spadá do kategorie konvektivní bouře (60,2 %) nejčastějším zaznamenaným typem byla bouřka (v 53,1 % událostí) a blesk (ve 44,9 % událostí). Celkem 27 událostí (27,8 %) způsobilo smrt 32 lidí. Kromě obětí hydrometeorologických extrémů byly zaznamenány také oběti náledí, zimních sportů a oběti v důsledku propadnutí se ledem. Většina z celkových 57 obětí (76 %) byli muži a patřila do věkové kategorie dospělý (18–64 let). Časoprostorová variabilita zaznamenaných hydrometeorologických extrémů byla značně ovlivněna politickými událostmi dané doby a určitou mírou nejistoty spjatou s dokumentárními prameny. Přesto diplomová práce významně doplnila databázi hydrometeorologických extrémů a jejich obětí a rozšířila dosud kusé poznatky o variabilitě živelných pohrom ve 40. a 50. letech 20. století v České republice.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with hydrometeorological extremes (HME) and fatalities during 1941–1960 in the Czech Republic. Data were obtained from newspapers Lidové noviny and Rudé právo, which cover the entire monitored area. In total, 98 HME events were recorded in the period 1941–1960, with a maximum in 1943 (16.5%) and an average of five events per year. The events were classified into five categories – flood, convective storm, winter phenomena, drought and severe frost. A total of 16 types of HME were then distinguished within the categories. Most events are part of the convective storms category (60.2 %) and the most common recorded types are storm (53.1 %) and lightning (44.9 %). Altogether 27 HME events (27.8%) caused 32 fatalities. Except for fatalities of HME, there were also recorded victims of glazed frost, winter sports and fatalities caused by falling in ground ice. Most of the total 57 victims (76.0%) were men and belonged to the adult age category (18– 64 years). The spatiotemporal variability of recorded hydrometeorological extremes was substantially influenced by political events at that time and some extent of the uncertainty typical of documentary evidence. In spite of the diploma thesis significantly supplemented the database of the hydrometeorological extremes and their victims and enlarged the fragmentary knowledge about the variability of natural disasters in the 1940s and 1950s in the Czech Republic.
