„Designer Babies“ - New Form of Eugenics

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se bude zabývat analýzou nové reprodukční a genetické technologie PGD (preimplantační diagnostiky) skrze teoretické koncepty Michela Foucaulta governmentality a biomoci. První část práce se zaměřuje na ukotvení „designer babies“ na poli eugeniky a její analýzy. Poté je zkoumána historie eugeniky z přelomu 19. a 20, století a v předválečné době, abychom lépe porozuměli současným eugenickým praktikám. Druhá část práce pak představuje kritickou analýzu diskurzů obklopujících „designer babies“ a také rozsah její aplikace. V závěrečné kapitole je práce obohacena o zkušenosti účastnic léčebné terapie neplodnosti, které přímo využily anebo plánují tuto technologii využít. Tato práce je připravovaná jako předvýzkum a metodologicky vychází především z písemných dokumentů.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis addresses an analysis of new reproductive and genetic technology called PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) via concepts of governmentality and biopower of Michel Foucault. The first part of the work focuses on anchorage of “designer babies” in the field of eugenics and its analysis. Then history of eugenics in the turn of 19 and 20 century and in prewar time is investigated in order to better understand current eugenic practices leading to concept of „designer babies“. Second part introduces critical analysis of discourses surrounding “designer babies” and also degree of application of PGD. In the final chapter work is enriched with experiences of participants of infertility medical therapy, who used it or plan to use it. This work is prepared as pre-research and methodologicallyis based primarily on written documents.
