Moral distress of perioperative nurses

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na téma morálního distresu perioperačních sester. V teoretické části jsou vybrány některé z mnoha definic morálního distresu z odborné literatury, druhy morálního distresu, determinanty, příčiny a dopady morálního distresu. V průzkumné části jsou prezentovány výsledky dotazníkového šetření od respondentů aktivně vykonávajících povolání perioperační sestry. Cílem průzkumu bylo zjistit, jak perioperační sestry eticky hodnotí vybrané modelové situace, zda se se situacemi setkávají a zda u nich situace vyvolávají morální distres, popř. jaké intenzity. Předložené modelové situace byly v naprosté většině případů hodnoceny jako špatné či spíše špatné. Například překračování kompetencí považuje za špatné 56 a spíše špatné 34 respondentů ze 100, bez ohledu na to, zda pracují v krajské či v oblastních nemocnicích, přičemž 54 sester se s překračováním kompetencí ve své praxi setkalo a u 23 z nich to vyvolalo morální distres, který u 2 z nich dosáhl té nejvyšší intenzity. Dále 13 sester uvedlo, že nemají odvahu úkol překračující jejich kompetence odmítnout. Nejvíce se pak morální distres u respondentů odráží v rovině emocionální a behaviorální.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is focused on the topic of moral distress of perioperative nurses. In the theoretical part some of the many definitions of moral distress are selected from the literature, types of moral distress, determinants, causes and effects of moral distress. The exploratory part presents the results of a questionnaire survey from respondents actively performing the profession of perioperative nurse. The aim of the research was to find out how perioperative nurses ethically evaluate selected model situations, whether they encounter situations and whether the situations cause them moral distress, or what intensity. The presented model situations were in the vast majority of cases assessed as bad or rather bad. For example, overestimation is considered bad by 56 and rather bad by 34 respondents out of 100, regardless of whether they work in big or small regional hospitals, while 54 nurses encountered overstepping in their practice and 23 of them caused moral distress, which in 2 of them it reached the highest intensity. In addition, 13 nurses stated that they did not have the courage to reject a task beyond their competence. The most moral distress among the respondents is reflected in the emotional and behavioral level.
