Anatomical-morphological study of the complex of mistletoe (Viscum album L.) and the silver fir (Abies alba Mill.).

Abstract:

Práce popisuje strukturně funkční vztah mezi jmelím bílým (Viscum album L.) a jeho hostitelem jedlí bělokorou (Abies alba Mill.). Jmelí jakožto poloparazit odebírá ze svého hostitele vodu a živiny, čímž narušuje jeho fyziologické procesy jako je například respirace či fotosyntéza. U hostitele tak především v sušších obdobích dochází k vodnímu stresu a jeho parazitované části vykazují lokální morfologické a anatomické změny. Tyto změny byly zkoumány na vzorcích letorostů a jehlic infikovaných jedlí a zároveň byly porovnány anatomické a morfologické znaky listů a letorostů jedle a jmelí a rozdíl mezi pohlavími u jmelí. Z hodnocených znaků se jednalo o příčnou plochu průřezu, plochu xylému, hustotu a průměr vodivých elementů, teoretickou hydraulickou vodivost a specifickou hmotnost listu. Vliv jmelí na jedli se obecně projevil znaky odpovídajícími stresu suchem, jako je menší příčná plocha průřezu jehlic a zvýšená hustota cévic v xylému letorostu. Nicméně vliv napadení byl spíše marginální. Jmelí překvapivě vykazovalo velmi podobnou teoretickou hydraulickou vodivost specifickou na plochu xylému i plochu listu v porovnání s jedlí a také vykazovalo velmi malé rozdíly mezi pohlavími, s významným rozdílem jen ve větší specifické hmotnosti u samčích listů.

Abstract:

This thesis describes the structural-functional relationship between mistletoe (Viscum album L.) and its host, silver fir (Abies alba Mill.). As a semi-parasite, mistletoe withdraws water and nutrients from its host, disrupting its physiological processes such as respiration and photosynthesis. This leads to water stress in the host, especially during drier periods, resulting in local morphological and anatomical changes in the parasitized parts. These changes were examined in samples of branches and needles infected by mistletoe and compared to anatomical and morphological features of fir needles and branches and differences between mistletoe genders. Evaluated traits included cross-sectional area, xylem area, density and diameter of conducting elements, theoretical hydraulic conductivity, and leaf specific weight. The influence of mistletoe on fir generally manifested characteristics indicative of drought stress, such as smaller needle cross-sectional area and increased vessel density in branch xylem. However, the impact of infestation was rather marginal. Surprisingly, mistletoe exhibited very similar theoretical hydraulic conductivity specific to xylem area and leaf area compared to fir, and also showed very small differences between genders, with a significant difference only in greater leaf specific weight in male leaves.
