Abstract:

Tématem disertační práce „Cesty božstev. Otázky interpretace náboženství a nacionalismu v moderním Japonsku“ je úloha náboženských jevů v procesu vytváření národní identity v moderním Japonsku a problematika identifikace a interpretace těchto jevů. První část práce se zabývá vymezením teoreticko-metodologického rámce. Charakterizuje religionistiku jako kritickou sociální vědu o náboženstvích. Autor se zabývá rovněž otázkou religionistického přístupu k náboženským jevům jako sociálním konstruktům a, vycházeje z pojetí Jonathana Z. Smithe, pojednává o náboženství jako o analytické kategorii formované v souvislostech západní, euroamerické kultury. Autor řeší otázku identifikace náboženských faktů v japonském kontextu. Pojednává též o teoriích sekularizace, o procesech vymezování náboženské a sekulární sféry a rovněž o koncepcích národa v sociálních vědách. Dále se věnuje teoriím implicitních náboženství. Zjišťuje, že teorie implicitního náboženství jsou v současné podobě příliš nepřesné, než aby mohly být využity při interpretaci náboženských jevů v moderním Japonsku. V závěru první části formuluje autor vymezení pojmu „náboženství“ a vychází přitom z koncepce Bensona Salera založené na hledání „rodových podobností“ jevů, které lze označit jako „náboženské“. První část uzavírá autor formulací výzkumných otázek. Druhá část práce se věnuje otázkám interpretace a systematizace náboženských jevů v Japonsku. Zaměřuje se na koncepce šintó a „japonského náboženství“ u H. Byrona Earharta, Karla Wernera, Thomase P. Kasulise, Josepha M. Kitagawy a Isaiaha Ben-Dasana. Práce shrnuje koncepce těchto autorů a konfrontuje je s alternativním pohledem, který narušuje stereotypní výklad šintó jako „původního japonského náboženství“ a zpochybňuje teze o „japonském náboženství“, které je specifické pro příslušníky japonského národa. V závěru zjišťuje, že koncepce uvedených autorů jsou do značné míry zatíženy předsudky ovlivněnými japonskou národní ideologií a také nekritickým zacházením s obecnými pojmy. Třetí, závěrečnou část disertace věnuje autor případu tokijské svatyně Jasukuni. Podává popis tzv. případu Jasukuni a shrnuje dějiny svatyně ve vztahu k historickému vývoji moderního Japonska, zejména v souvislosti se vznikem a vývojem státního šintó. Hledá ideová východiska státního šintó a podrobněji analyzuje tzv. nativistické myšlenkové směry období Edo, zejména „národní nauku“ kokugaku a školu Mito. Zabývá se procesem uvádění „duší“ válečných padlých do svatyně a vztahem uctívání padlých v Jasukuni ke kultu předků a k uctívání zemřelých. V závěru navrhuje autor alternativní interpretační rámec použitelný při analýze jevů spojených s japonskou religiozitou, kterým se může stát prostorové hledisko „zde-tam-kdekoli“ formulované Jonathanem Z. Smithem.

Abstract:

The thesis “Gods’ Ways. Interpreting Religions and Nationalism in Modern Japan” deals with the role of religious phenomena in the process of forming the national identity in modern Japan, with the problem to identify and interpret these phenomena. The introductory chapter is concerned with the issue of defining the theoretical and methodological frame of the thesis. It characterizes the study of religions as a critical social science. Referring to Jonathan Z. Smith, the author deals with the concept of religion as with an analytical category and treats this concept as a social construction originating in the context of Western, Euro-American culture. The thesis is also occupied with the question of identifying religious phenomena in the context of Japan. It deals with the theories of secularization, with the process of defining religious and secular domains, as well as with the concepts of nation in social sciences. It concerns the subject of implicit religions, finding the theories of implicit religions to be rather vague and inadequate for analyzing religious phenomena in modern Japan. In the conclusion to the chapter, the author proposes the definition of “religion” based on Benson Saler’s concept of tracing “family resemblances” of the phenomena classified as religious. Second chapter deals with the topic of interpreting and systematizing religious phenomena in Japan. It concentrates on the concepts of Shinto and Japanese religion in the works of H. Byron Earhart, Karel Werner, Thomas P. Kasulis, Joseph M. Kitagawa, and Isaiah Ben-Dasan. The author offers a summary of their theories and confronts them with an alternative, more critical approach deconstructing the stereotypical view of Shinto as “indigenous Japanese religion” that is characterized as specific of the members of the Japanese nation. It concludes saying that the concepts of the above mentioned authors are affected by various biases and prejudices based on the national ideology of Japan and by quite a careless use of basic terms and categories. Third, final part deals with Yasukuni shrine in Tokio. It offers a survey of the so called Yasukuni issue and brings about a survey of the history of the shrine in the context of the history of modern Japan, particularly in the context of the origins and development of State Shinto. The author seeks the ideological origins of the State Shinto and analyzes the so called nativist movements of Edo period, particularly the Kokugaku and Mito schools. The chapter deals with the process of enshrining the spirits of the war victims in the Yasukuni shrine and it also treats the topic of worshipping the war victims in relation to the worshipping of dead and of ancestor veneration. In the concluding part, the author offers a possible interpretative frame to be used for interpreting the phenomena of Japanese religiosity. This theory is based on a geographical or spatial view of “here – there – anywhere” proposed by Jonathan Z. Smith.
